Matheny, a West Virginia native and longtime keys player for Athens, Ohio, indie heroes Southeast Engine, has broken out on his own with Strange Constellations, his debut 11-song solo collection out February 24, 2017, which might more than anything provoke the question: Why not sooner?

Listen to The Afghan Whigs “Arabian Heights,”

“Arabian Heights” [link here] is the driving new track from the The Afghan Whigs forthcoming album, In Spades, due out May 5th worldwide from Sub Pop. The song exudes the gutbucket exoticism of Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti writ large, driven by drummer Patrick Keeler’s bravura, tribal cadences. Greg Dulli says of Keeler’s contribution, “Rick [Nelson, who engineered the album] got incredible drum sounds, and what Patrick does on that song is a master class in drumming.”

In Spades is now available for preorder on CD / 180 gram-LP / CS / DL from Sub Pop [link here]. The album, led by the single “Demon In Profile” and the aforementioned “Arabian Heights,” alongside standouts “Oriole,” “Copernicus,” and “Toy Automatic,” is the follow-up to the band’s internationally acclaimed Do to the Beast. After the phenomenal online break-out success of “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby” (which has + 46 Million YouTube views to date), from the early Cigarettes After Sex EP (‘I.’) from 2012, the Brooklyn-based Gonzalez (originally from El Paso, Texas) wanted to project his worldview on to a bigger screen, a broader canvas. As Greg explains, “This is like the novel or feature-length version of Cigarettes. I wanted it to feel like a complete work, where some of the imagery repeats – like it’s all in the same world. It’s very much a fulfillment of the feelings in the short works.”

Fans of rock, theater and all things macabre can click here to check out the exclusive worldwide premiere of the brand new music video for cabaret rock songstress Kat Robichaud’s “She Looked Like She Owed Death Money” on Yahoo today. The elaborately choreographed performance video is taken from Kat Robichaud’s rock opera/theatrical experience, MISFIT CABARET, and features Kat and her cast of dynamic performers. Of the song and theatrical representation, Robichaud commented, “The song itself is a metaphor for alcoholism. I’ve had people very close to me battle with it, and it can be a real succubus – there to comfort you at your lowest point but won’t lift you up. Around the time I was writing for the show, a friend was talking about a person who was strung out, looking like they owed death money, and I thought it was such a graphically gruesome description. I had to write a song around it.”

Coastwest Unrest Shares New Song “EPA”

Las Vegas band Coastwest Unrest today shared “EPA (Edward Paul, Abbey)” from their upcoming album The Crazed Ones today in front of Earth Day. The album will be released sometime over the summer.

Frontman Noah Dickie penned most of the album last year, before there was a thought of a Trump presidency, but his lyrics on “EPA” are remarkably prescient. The song is a tribute to the dystopian/anarchist novelist Edward Paul Abbey who predicted catastrophe in novels like The Monkey Wrench Gang (and of course whose initials coincidentally correspond with a hot button topic).

The storyline is full of sarcasm and satire, and to us is a big middle finger to what’s expected from an all-female band.”

Today, at the Crackle upfront presentation held at Sony Square NYC, the streaming service greenlit their new scripted original drama, “The Oath,” (WT) written and created by former Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy Joe Halpin (“Hawaii Five-O,” “Ice,” “The Lottery”). Executive produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and his G-Unit Film & Television Inc., the series explores a different kind of subculture – gangs made up of those sworn to protect and defend.

These secret societies are nearly impossible to get into – but once inside, members will do what they must to protect each other from enemies on the outside and from within their own ranks. The drama examines this all-too-real world through a gang that started out with the right intentions. But in order to stay both out of jail and alive, they will all need to re-examine the principles that guide them and speculate as to whether they can trust the badged criminals that operate amongst them. The 10-episode, one-hour original pulls the curtain back on the inner workings of this band of brothers forced to turn on each other after being picked off by the FBI.

In this ongoing series, her young monsters are usually in a position of self-discovery and power, potentially mastering their world as they encounter adolescence. LA psych-pop prodigy Julian Jasper

Born in San Diego and currently based in LA, Julian Jasper is a Steely Dan for the 21st century, or maybe a lapsed Rundgren after he crossed paths with Ariel Pink. “Wait Until Dawn” unfolds with a confidence rarely heard these days that’s representative of the EP at large, driven by carefree, hook-laden melodies and dynamic basslines. Jasper sounds like Boz Scaggs on a dopamine bender, distractedly strutting and bouncing from one disused phone booth to another looking for a connection.

Hear L.A. Witch’s new song: “Ain’t Comin’ Home”

It’s easy to forget that just a few decades ago, the only viable means for penetrating the golden glamour of Los Angeles was via the dusty trail of Route 66. And just as the arteries of the interstate latched onto the thumping heart of California, so too came the amplified sounds of a new restless generation. There was acid on the streets and revolution in the air, but there were also Hell’s Angels in the alleys and Manson’s family on the desert periphery. It was an age of innocence, beauty, and opportunity, with an underbelly of lawlessness and depravity. And it had a soundtrack.

Crooked Bangs are a dark punk rock band from Austin, Texas. Their second full-length, II, is out April 21, 2017 on Nervous Intent Records. A tour of the West Coast will follow in late spring. As an album, II belongs to no specific subgenre, and as a band Crooked Bangs belongs to no specific movement, revivalist or contemporary. They’re a band for which the overly-broad and all-encompassing label of “punk” makes a convenient editorial cop-out. Crooked Bangs are at once brooding and howling, unrestrained and taut.
