Howlite – ‘Reasons’ EP
Howlite is the reincarnation of Melbourne musician and visual artist Alison Thom. The moniker alludes to a mineral, thought to bear properties that calm the wearer and release old pains. In a way the shift is also a catharsis for Thom, who unburdens herself of her name and her folk roots to delve into pop music, a darker territory of layered vocals and synthetic sounds; freed from the past to create anew.
The Reasons EP, underwent many incarnations prior to its final release, including a session with Mark Lang (Skipping Girl Vinegar) and Nick Huggins (Two Bright Lakes), at the latter’s beachside studio, which set Thom down the path of using synthesiser samples and creating loop tracks. Inspiration struck with Melbourne artist and producer Michael Robinson, and the two set about creating a hybrid of sounds, taking elements from Scandinavian pop artists like The Knife and Aurora, the dreamy guitar fuzz and soft harmonies of Daughter and a homage to the grand scale drumming patterns of Florence and the Machine. The goal was to create something bittersweet – uplifting and emotional.

History is built on creativity and adaption. Two years into their collaborative relationship, adidas Originals and Rita Ora continue to innovate in their combined visions while developing a true synergy. We’ve continued to be inspired by Ora, our Original icon and the queen of color, chaos and attitude. The Deconstruction Pack, Rita Ora’s newest collection, will be in stores on November 24th.
Unique details and fits unite two ranges for Q3 & 4. Daring lines and camouflaged clues draw us into multi-colored arrangements of rigid naïveté and lean cuts in a pack quite literally painted by numbers while fearless block builders own winter in a deconstructed range of bold playfulness and clashing graphic color cues emblazoned across comfortable unisex tailoring.

XO single ‘Waiting Game’
Following the release of ‘Divine Disaster’ earlier this year, XO (Sunil Heera) returns with his new single ‘Waiting Game’, taken from his first full-length project due early 2017.
XO’s signature dark ethereal beats and warped R&B style flows through the ‘Waiting Game’, which also see him take centre stage on the vocal front. Naturally fitting for a deeply personal song- XO says ” The inspiration for “Waiting Game” came from a very raw, vulnerable place. I feel like I’m pushing boundaries and really letting my guard down to give the listeners a real piece of me for the first time”. ‘Waiting Game’ is a melancholic journey from start to finish, reflected in the video co-directed and shot by XO and Beck Clewlow.

Last week, Emel shared a new music video for “Ensen Dhaif (Human, Helpless Human),” a track off her forthcoming album Ensen out February 2017. The high energy, abstract piece conveys Emel’s political commentary on oppression through provocative, striking choreography. In the words of director Allie Avital:
“Ensen Dhaif” is a movement-based exploration of enslavement, imprisonment, and our delusions of freedom within the constraints of a capitalist society. Between myself, Emel, and the dancers, we all had different interpretation of oppression, whether in relation to a dictatorship, racism, police brutality, gender roles, or even the ways in which we oppress ourselves. With the choreography and editing, I really wanted to express this rhythm of urgency, violence, and perhaps an uplifting sense of revolution.”

Premiered by XXL, Scotty returns with the video for “Stupid Rich,” a ruminative, Southern-fried, guitar and organ-driven thumper. Seminal band Son Volt has announced the February 17 release of their new album, Notes Of Blue (Thirty Tigers). Led by the songwriting and vocals of Jay Farrar, Son Volt was one of the most instrumental and influential bands in launching the alt.country movement of the 1990’s. A movement that was the precursor to what is now widely referred to as Americana.
The 10 songs on Notes Of Blue are inspired by the spirit of the blues, but not the standard blues as most know it. The unique and haunting tunings of Mississippi Fred McDowell, Skip James and Nick Drake were all points of exploration for Farrar for the new collection. The album opens with the country soul of “Promise The World”, followed by “Back Against The Wall”, a song that could stand alongside the great Son Volt songs of their early albums. However, Notes Of Blue reflects the blues as it resides in the folk tradition, but heavily amplified. The primal stomp of “Cherokee St.”, the frenetic guitar on “Static” and the raw slide in “Sinking Down” exude grit and attitude. Conversely, tracks such as “The Storm” and “Cairo and Southern” seamlessly meld blues with hypnotic melodies that add a unique balance to Notes Of Blue.

New Jersey-based metal band Lorna Shore recently announced their sophomore full-length album, Flesh Coffin, which will out February 17, 2017 with Outerloop Records, to great acclaim. With fans excited for new music from Lorna Shore, today the band partnered with Metal Injection for the exclusive premiere of the debut track off Flesh Coffin, titled, “Denounce the Light” which can be found here. “Denounce the Light” was the first song Lorna Shore wrote for Flesh Coffin, creating the musical foundation for every other song created. Lorna Shore’s Adam De Micco had this to say about the track:
“It was about having a simple and digestible song structure, but making sure the content within that structure was interesting to both the musician as well as everyday fan. Lyrically, this song is about someone calling forth into the universe offering their life (because their dying) so they can live again at any means necessary.” – Adam De Micco
Adds the band, “In many ways this album is darker and rawer than our previous two, and hope plays a smaller role. ‘(Was It) The Cruelest Thing’ is a love song to the memory of beauty when hope and light are extinguished. It’s the lie the heart manufactures in order to keep beating once all context is gone.”
Slothrust has debuted the video for their most recent single “Rotten Pumpkin” exclusively on Nylon. From the first few notes, this record grabs you. It’s raw soul and funk music crafted to perfection. Wailing vocals, soaring horns and a super tight rhythm section. With a dirty production style, Soul Scratch serves up something that’s familiar, fresh and never more relevant.
This soulful sextet is a hard hitting groove machine, built in L.A.’s San Fernando Valley, on a mission to save the world from mediocrity. The video finds Well$ mobbing with his crew in a dark room, the greyscale color scheme eliminating much of the light that attempts to sneak through, except for an intermittent flash of white illuminating the rapper’s silhouette. Produced by fellow Immaculate Taste producer Sipho The Gift, whose buzzing low synths and scratching percussion lend the track a foreboding atmosphere, “XXX” is a highlight from the 21-year-old artist’s recent mixtapeThe Way I’m Living Makes My Mom Nervous.
