Gord Downie released his most poignant solo album, Secret Path, last month in his native Canada. The multimedia project tells the story of 12-year old Chanie Wenjack who died running away from Canada’s residential school system fifty years ago. This government-sanctioned, church-led institution was designed to take the “native” out of Indigenous children, and operated beneath public consciousness until 1996. Chanie died of exposure trying to walk home to the family he was taken from over 400 miles away.

Adam & Elvis share audio and video for new single ‘Hanging Tree’

The sorry tale of a young intellectual who, despite his rationalism, loses his mind over unrequited love, ‘Hanging Tree’ conforms to Adam & Elvis’s tragi-comic inclinations. Sonically, however, the song is all vivacious alt-pop, charging along a crookedly mellifluous path as the Malone brothers’ vocals veer from moody baritone to full-throttle tenor. Sawtoothed guitars sear and the rhythm section thunders while ‘Hanging Tree’ revolves around its Grandaddy-meets-Pixies chorus that provides a soaring indie-disco chant-along belying the morbid moral.

Alternative Pop Artist Adam Jensen Releases New Single Via Billboard

Today, alternative pop artist Adam Jensen releases his latest single, entitled “The Mystic” via all DSPs. The “wrong-side-of-the-river” banger exclusively premiered via the legendary Billboard yesterday. Listen here.

Proving yet again his ability to craft a polished pop track with an edge, “The Mystic” captures the hard times Jensen, and his hometown friends of Boston, face on a daily basis. “My mother has something like 12 brothers and sisters, so I have a few cousins and uncles and friends who have struggled with addiction, jail time, parole, etc. It’s interesting to reflect on that stuff as an adult. This song’s message is really a common tale around here. The ones in the gutter, the burn outs, the mistfits. The ones who didn’t make it. The pariahs.”

PSALM ZERO Gives Away Anohni Cover Via Clrvynt

Primarily created as a solo endeavor by PSALM ZERO guitarist/vocalist Charlie Looker, the new cover track also features guest vocals from the band’s good friend Nicholas McMaster (Krallice, Geryon), and is likely to be performed by the full band live in the future. Looker reports on his choice in covering singer/composer Anohni, “‘Atrocities’ is an older Anohni track, from her debut record as Antony & the Johnsons. Anohni is one of my all-time musical heroes, an absolute colossus. I’ve covered several of her songs in informal live solo acoustic settings, but this song seemed the most appropriate for a PSALM ZERO treatment. The lyrics are bone-chilling to me, especially in this current political and social climate where we’re reassessing the weight of various violent histories, as well as facing a new rise of fascist ideology and sentiment worldwide. As for the future, I’m bracing myself, trying to be ready for anything.”
