SKOPE NEWS FOR MAY 18, 2016

CANARY NEW SINGLE

Melbourne quintet Canary invite us to step a little further into their world, today announcing the release of their second album I Am Lion (Friday July 8) and single ‘Fickle Heart’.

With me all this shit begins/With me it’s supposed to end. It’s a fitting opening line for a band so self-aware, so mindful and explorative of the human condition. It’s not narcissism – it’s catharsis. ‘Fickle Heart’ is two-minded: a self-assured stomp juxtaposes a lilting meander. It culminates in roiling chaos; something recognisable to anyone who’s felt righteous in their bitter self-destruction following a breakup.

THE SILENCE KIT NEW SINGLE

Philadelphia-based post-punk band The Silence Kit has a new single out now. Released in May of 2016, “One Sixty” is The Silence Kit’s latest from their semi-monthly singles series. Layered and synth-driven, with stabs of guitar and pulsating rhythms, the song is The Silence Kit at their most driving and melodic, building on the more upbeat side of their sound, while harkening back to the spirit of early Rough Trade and Factory Records albums.

THE QUALIA “OUT FOR BLOOD”

Jittery 60’s style garage rock couples with spacey synth experimentation and danceable new wave beats on Cotillion Knives, the new album from the Brooklyn band, The Qualia. The album is due out August 12. The first single, “Out For Blood” is available as an approved downloadable mp3. Bright and energetic, the track’s unhinged, upbeat melody and surprise jazz inflections feel perfectly danceable, underpinning a story of teenage frustration and excitement.

PHEDRE NEW VIDEO

Toronto melted-pop duo Phèdre make music for escaping. The visually evocative soundscapes emerging on their previous releases take form like a great comic; a concise narrative, bright colors, and psychedelic textures. If comic books had strobe lights Phedre’s certainly would.

THE RUA “WITHOUT YOU”

The track is about purging toxic relationships in order to move forward onto bigger adventures. Band worked with director Declan Whitebloom (Taylor Swift, Hilary Duff, Jess Glynne), to show the process of writing, recording, promoting, and playing music as a continuous shot to create the video. It’s a heightened reality – a lot of bright colors in contrast to a cardboard world.

Tradition Lives, his first disc of all-new material since 2010, was produced by Jimmy Ritchey — someone that Chesnutt says is a crucial part of his sound, having worked with him for years. “He and I hooked up at a time when not a lot of people had a lot of faith in me anymore because I stayed ‘country’ when the industry was going the other way. I needed somebody like Jimmy who really believed in my kind of country music,” said Chesnutt.

MEGAN VICE NEW SINGLE

Megan Vice and Popdust are teaming up today to premiere Megan’s latest preview, “Tell It To My Heart” from her upcoming Spread the News EP, set to hit July 1st. This fresh take on the Taylor Dayne classic delicately balances her signature beat-heavy sound with slick elements of soul and trop-pop. Megan says of the track, “‘Tell It To My Heart’ is a major nostalgia track for me – it was always a favorite of mine growing up and is an 80’s pop and freestyle classic. I came to Fake Money with the idea of slowing it down a bit and making it darker and more vibey, as the original Taylor Dayne version is much more in your face. He totally felt what I was going for – this tune is also a favorite of his. We think this reimagining is super cool!”
