TRANSGENDER MUSICIAN CAIT BRENNAN TO RELEASE NEW CD
To say Cait Brennan has lived many lives is truly an understatement. She’s been a schoolteacher, a working screenwriter, a dyed-in-the-wool indie record store clerk, a newspaper reporter, a printing plant grunt. She’s changed her name more times than she remembers and has occupied more genders than there are on the map. But one thing, above all, has burned bright at the center of everything: her music.
Cait has never been your basic folkie singer-songwriter; she’s always been more Bowie or St Vincent than Bon Iver. A singer with a powerful, singular five-octave rock voice, a prolific songwriter, and a multi-instrumentalist who plays every note on her own home recordings, Brennan worked for years in secret, creating gorgeous, otherworldly rock sounds that have never seen the light of day—until now. Discovered and championed by musician and production wunderkind Fernando Perdomo (who’s worked with Linda Perhacs, Emitt Rhodes, Beck, Fiona Apple and Jakob Dylan among many others), Cait Brennan’s debut album is here at last.
THE CANNOLIS X TRUMP
The Cannolis creators are not afraid to take on all sorts of topics, including politics. The latest short release from the creators of this satirical cartoon that has its roots in shows such as Family Guy and The Sopranos is a spoof of none other than Donald Trump, one of the current presidential candidates.
In the episode, Trump is featured speaking to a group of supporters in Little Italy, an area of New York that Trump notes “is only three blocks long.” Speaking in front of the Cannoli’s cafe, Trump promises the supporters that he will build a “great wall” around Little Italy to keep out the Chinese, whom he claims are his friends, and will get Mexico to pay for it. “Nobody builds walls better than me,” Trump states, “’cause that’s what I do. I’m a builder.”

K Camp quickly shows he’s also a man of the arts, comparing himself to Picasso and Michelangelo. The audio of the track premiered earlier this year via Complex, who said the “final result is an infectious R&B turn-up track that has club anthem potential and should easily get fans ready for what Verse Simmonds has coming in the near future.”
DJ KATAPILA FROM GHANA MAKES INTERNATIONAL DEBUT
DJ Katapila makes Ga traditional music using electronic sounds instead of live percussion to create his own kind of what he calls house music. Born Ishmael Abbey in Accra, Ghana, his long career as a DJ traveling the country top to bottom set the stage for a late-in-life explosion of production activity. Beginning with the release of a single and then the 2009 full length Trotro, the disc jockey and producer has managed to make his sound ubiquitous in Ghana and other parts of West Africa in piracy-driven anonymity. Awesome Tapes From Africa will release Trotro on CD, LP, Digital and limited edition cassette on February 19.
In the context of Ghana’s pop music landscape, Katapila’s music is singular. The uptempo, bass-heavy, Roland 808-rooted sounds echo early 1990’s Detroit techno and Chicago acid house more than the contemporary hiplife productions blasting across Ghanaian airwaves currently. However, the structure of Katapila’s sound directly descends from Ga musical lineage found around Accra. The music contains remnants of the neo-traditional dance music forms gome, kpanlogo and gyama that he was immersed in as a youth.
