HIGH HIGHS NEW SINGLE

Cascades, the title of the second record from the Brooklyn group High Highs, could be read in a number of ways. It could be taken as a nod to the group’s hometown — the coastal Australian city of Sydney, which rests against the beautiful, blue Pacific Ocean. Or it could be a nod to the record’s sound, which retains the broad scope of the group’s debut, Open Season, but feels bigger, and grander – sheets of sound, raining down softly. In reality, though, the title is a memory – a moment Jack Milas and Oli Chang remember while driving through the Cascade Mountains on tour.

Toy Kingdom was released January 3rd of 2015 and debuted at #12 on the KEXP Variety Charts. Since then the project expanded to include a second guitarist Dylan Arlick and new drummer Alex Paulino. VICTORIAN HALLS CELEBRATE “THIS HOLIDAY”

“It always feels like you are never where you want to be during the holidays. In one way or another, nostalgia always creeps in. We were sincere in what we were trying to do with “This Holiday,” states vocalist Sean Lenart. “We didn’t want to create something somber; we wanted something upbeat but still in the spirit, and all while under the blanket of a rock song. Musically, I took some liberties with the bridge…we added Beach Boys-esque harmonies, clave and wood blocks, and it was great to experiment because it was so far from the space Victorian Halls usually occupies. The song came naturally, and felt like it wrote itself.”

LUCERO RELEASES “YOUNG OUTLAWS” VIDEO

Lucero’s new album All A Man Should Do contains some of the most resonant lyrics Ben Nichols has ever written. They read like chapters from his life: the duality of relationships, getting older, finding where you want to be in this world and more. The band also collaborated with Jody Stephens of Big Star on this record, who sang back-up vocals on the album’s Big Star cover “I’m In Love With A Girl”. The title, All A Man Should Do, is also a Big Star reference.

LOU CHARLE$ “MAMA SAY”

For the second offering from his upcoming “In Transit” project, Dallas emcee Lou CharLe$ takes us back to his days at college and those weekly phone calls to Mom who always had just the right words of encouragement and advice for a young man struggling to find his way in the world and those of us lucky enough to have that kind of support can relate. Once again noted Dallas producer J. Rhodes provides an easy conversational track that gives the song an intimate tone while Los Angeles native Miki Rose cameos with that sage maternal counsel that made Lou the man he is today. This is one of Lou’s more personal songs off the project and at the end of the day, what’s not to love about an ode to one of the most influential people in a young man’s life.

THE GLOOMIES PREMIERE “LSD” VIDEO ON NOISEY

Belying their grim name, The Gloomies were formed in a sun-bleached surf town in southern California. Their debut single illustrates this strange paradox, mixing gritty realism and yearning optimism in equal measure. Returning to his hometown in 2014 after a stint in New York, lead singer Andy Craig lived out of a suitcase for much of the next year. The Gloomies’ single documents this period of transition, the dread of uncertainty ultimately giving way to the promise of the future. “LSD” / “Groves” is available now courtesy of Thrill Me Records.

QUIET HOLLERS MADONNA COVER

Regarding the “Material Girl” cover, lead singer/songwriter Shadwick Wilde says “My first reaction was horror… as I instinctively recoil from so-called “pop” music. But the lyrics are so fucking sad, and the theme so apropos for an unknown band trying to raise some cash – I had to take an honest crack at it. We shot this video late one night after practice… I liked how when we keyed out the white wall, it made my teeth look like a gnarly grill.”

NO SKY GOD STREAM NEW ALBUM ON BROOKLYN VEGAN

Recorded by Jon Altschuler at The Seaside Lounge and mixed by Cedar Apffel at Alligator Lady, Infidel is a great leap forward for No Sky God, jettisoning their previous hard rock and folk identities for a sound palette drawn from the late 60s: On Infidel Watson drew inspiration from the songs of Robert Wyatt, George Harrison, and Arthur Lee, focusing his lyrics on questions of personal failure, monolithic doubt, and the hollow satisfactions of revenge.

BRAVES “GET IT RIGHT”

Singled out by DIY Mag as one of the best new artists coming out of Australia’s most isolated city, Perth, Braves draw influence from music histories beyond their hometown: they tread in the footsteps of Southern Californian punk heroes FIDLAR and the lo-fi pop rock of Glaswegian guys PAWS, and swing by the scrappy indie rock coat-tails of Ohio’s Cloud Nothings. Braves write upbeat garage tracks with catchy, honest choruses about being fuck-ups. Huge riffs and hooks ahoy.
