SKOPE NEWS FOR JANUARY 22, 2015

SUMMER CANNIBALS “SOMETHING NEW” SINGLE

Summer Cannibals are a female-fronted, punk-flecked four piece (think Sleater Kinney, Breeders, Veruca Salt, etc). In just a few short months after the release of their debut, Summer Cannibals earned deserved props from some of their heroes (including a ringing endorsement from the Thermals), toured with bands like Chvrches, and found themselves at #2 on the coveted “Best New Band” list in Willamette Week. Now they’re back with their second full-length, the raw, to-the-point “Show Us Your Mind”.

CHARLI XCX PREMIERES NEW VIDEO FOR “DOING IT”

The video was filmed in the desert outside of Los Angeles and was inspired by iconic movies such as Thelma & Louise and Natural Born Killers. Watch as the two partners-in-crime cruise through the desert in a pink monster truck, donning wrestling masks, evading [male stripper?!] police and raising hell every step of the way… and that’s just the tip of the iceberg!

THE BEST OF THE GRATEFUL DEAD

The Grateful Dead’s long strange trip reaches an important mile marker this year with the celebration of the band’s 50th anniversary. 2015 is already shaping up to be an epic year thanks to news of the original members reuniting for three final shows at Chicago’s Soldier Field this July dubbed “Fare Thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years of Grateful Dead.” A documentary about the Grateful Dead from award-winning filmmaker Amir Bar-Lev and executive producer Martin Scorsese has also been announced.

The Dead will get the yearlong festivities underway with the release of THE BEST OF THE GRATEFUL DEAD. This career-spanning, two-disc collection is filled with nearly three hours of the legendary group’s best studio work. The music will be available March 31 on CD for $19.98. The set will also be available digitally.

VOCAB SLICK “COLORFUL VOCAB” VIDEO

The EP features production from Brycon, Yoyo Ox and Bobby Ozuna as well as guest appearances from Joe Mousepad and Slick’s partner in Distant Relatives, the late Maynee, who passed away during the making of Somethin’ Slick, as did Slick’s mother and uncle. Vocab describes “Colorful Vocab” as “a raw, back-to-basics-style song. I didn’t even really want to do a chorus for the song – just wanted the raw beat and lyrics and that’s it, but I sent it to DJ Tony Tone anyways to see what he would do with the joint, and I’m glad I did.” Somethin’ Slick is out now on iTunes.

ZHU “FADED” REMIX

Today marks the official release of Orlando Wolf’s rework of ZHU’s track, Faded.

Inspired by Mind Against, Finnebassen, Thankyou City and Caribou, this track began its life with all intentions to be an original. Plans were then changed after stumbling across the Faded vocal line and the realisation that the two worked so well together. Deep dark house – more than Orlando Wolf but the sound of 2015.

SKYE STEELE “GROWING SONG”

Born out of a winter’s seclusion in the deep woods of Montana’s Bitterroot Valley, Skye Steele’s newly released Up From The Bitterroot offers an unflinching chronicle of the downward arc of a crumbling marriage, the turmoil of separation, and the painful first steps of moving on. BBC Radio 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne proclaims, “Astonishingly beautiful”, while Joe Wawrzyniak with Jersey Beat says, “Steele’s warm subdued vocals and expert violin playing make for a winning double whammy.” And AmericanaUK’s Jonathan Aird proclaims, “You’ll have heard few finer such albums this year.”

THOMAS D’ARCY NEW SINGLE

Largely concentrating on soundtrack and commercial work, along with producing a number of Toronto-based artists, D’Arcy followed in 2013 with his first solo LP, What We Want. For Fooled You Twice D’Arcy wants to reconfirm the faith in the creative possibilities of the three-minute pop song. On the subject, D’Arcy says, “My approach has always been trying to exist in this area where pop meets non-pop. I’ve written songs that have been eerie and ambient, and I’ve written songs built around shameless hooks. But the idea I keep coming back to is whenever pop music achieves this apex of creativity and commercial viability at the same time, that’s when it becomes something special. That’s when it becomes great art.”

THE ROOK NEW SINGLE “INTERMISSION”

For a little more about the single: To us, Intermission is an attempt to reconcile the longing for a past love with the realization that sometimes longing is the only thing keeping an otherwise broken relationship alive, a narrative delivered within the context of a jittery yet driving pocket. Okayplayer described it as “bright, choppy and heavily instrumental soul stuff that’ll either make you wanna move or hit the couch and commence the evening’s air blessing.” Our friends over at TheNext2Shine praised what they called the “groovy shimmer and soaring vocal motif of echoed memories and missed connection.”

DANKO JONES TO RELEASE FIRE MUSIC

Danko Jones has announced a April 21 U.S. release date for FIRE MUSIC via Bad Taste Records/MRI. The new album is loaded with some of the most incendiary, fierce, and downright pissed-off songs the band has ever committed to tape. In the past, Danko Jones’ repertoire has frequently exhibited a physical and emotional release for those times when love is unkind, but with these songs the trio exhibits what happens when therapy doesn’t work. Song to song, the listener experiences Danko’s pent-up agitation that has been left to stew, getting expelled into pure, merciless, violent rock ‘n’ roll fury. The repertoire unleashes a torrent of Misfits-worthy shout along hooks, as Jones crosses into a realm where whatever belief he ever had in love and romance has disintegrated into the darkest depths of a blackened soul.

LONELADY NEW ALBUM + SINGLE

Following last year’s single “Groove It Out’”, LoneLady (Julie Campbell) announces her new album Hinterland. This is her second full length and follows 2010’s Nerve Up.

Hinterland (”the country behind” in German) conjures impressions of decayed Manchester outskirts and reclusive inner landscapes obsessively throughout the record, as Campbell continues her fascination with the post-industrial ruinscape. At its core beats an uncomplicated drum machine rhythm and synthetic percussion that recalls fractured memories of minimal wave and even early techno and dance, dynamically spliced through with Campbell’s intricate, choppy and propulsive guitar playing.

THE MOUNTAIN GOATS NEW SINGLE

n 2014, John Darnielle’s novel Wolf in White Van spent several weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List and was nominated for the National Book Award. On April 7 in the US and April 13 in Europe, Darnielle and his band the Mountain Goats return with Beat the Champ a collection of songs about professional wrestling.

“I wrote these songs to re-immerse myself in the blood and fire of the visions that spoke to me as a child, and to see what more there might be in them now that I’m grown,” Darnielle says of Beat the Champ’s 12 songs.

THEORIES “CYCLE OF DECAY”

Titled Regression, the ten-track bruiser was recorded at The Red Room and The Boiler Room with producer/engineer Derek Moree (The Sword, Pelican, Minus The Bear et al) with mixing and mastering manned by Visceral Sound’s Scott Hull (Pig Destroyer, Agoraphobic Nosebleed). The resulting ten cuts make up one of the most belligerent releases from the Metal Blade stable in recent memory. Commended by the LA Weekly for, “bringing something new to the deathgrind table,” THEORIES’ Regression is a gristly, fuck-all soundtrack to social discontent, economic uncertainty, environmental catastrophes, and the inevitable cycle of decay. Doused in gnashing, prototypical hyper speed blasts and sub-nuclear riff incursions, the band’s meticulously-executed yet organically-scornful delivery is difficult to dismiss. Still, listeners will find moments of dissonant groove and clarity, as well guitar leads not often heard within the genre.
