OIL BOOM “THE SNEAK TIP”
The history of North Texas self-described “rad-dirt” band Oil Boom can be traced back to a simply worded Craigslist “Musicians Wanted” ad, placed at the tail end of 2009. Whereas most such ads tend to lead to uncomfortable pairings of disparate influences and stylistic aesthetics, guitarist Ryan Taylor (formerly of Oklahoma City blues-rock stalwarts The Rounders) and St. Louis expatriate drummer Dugan Connors, proved the exception to the rule, bonding over their mutual affection for lo-fi blues and 60s garage rock. “We had our first jam on Dec. 31st, 2009,” says Taylor. “So we figured that was some kind of omen to continue into the next decade, pretty much solely so we could bring it up now and look like magical soothsayers.” Since that fateful decade closeout jam, the group has been hard at work crafting ear-catching melodies and mind-bending arrangements, originally in the form of their first EP, Black Waxy, produced by Grammy award winning engineer Stuart Sikes (Loretta Lynn, The Walkmen).

30 NYC STREET MUSICIANS COVER BILLY JOEL’S “NEW YORK STATE OF MIND”
The Noise Beneath the Apple® (TNBTA), a multi-media project that strives to legitimize the profession of busking, today partnered with Esquire Magazine to premiere a one-of-a-kind musical collaboration that honors street musicians and the city of New York. 30 of NYC’s buskers, who were were featured in the project’s self-titled 200-page limited edition art-style book, recently came together at Grand Street Recording in Brooklyn, NY to record a version of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind.” Violins, musical saw, cello, accordion, beatbox, stunning vocals and more blend together to create this unique, six-plus minute cover. The song was arranged, produced and mixed by recording artist Keaton Simons.

Late last year, Peter Morén of Peter Bjorn And John released Broken Swenglish Vol. 1, an EP that took some of the choice cuts from his Swedish-language solo albums and translated them into English. Now, almost a year later, Morén will release the second volume, and today you can hear its first single, “The Odyssey.” This was already a catchy track in its original Swedish incarnation on 2012′s Pyramiden, but for English-speaking fans it takes on a humorous new meaning.

NIYKEE HEATON’S DEBUT EP IS OUT TODAY ON STEVE RIFKIND & RUSSELL SIMMONS’ ALL DEF MUSIC
Bad Intentions, the debut EP from 19-year-old Niykee Heaton, is out today on All Def Music in partnership with Capitol Records and available on iTunes now.
