FESTIVALNET.COM CELEBRATES 18 YEARS

The short history of the Internet is littered with thousands of start-ups that have come and gone. Eighteen years is a long life for a small Internet business, especially a thriving and profitable one. “We are older than Google, Facebook, Bing, and Twitter,” says co-founder Kurt Irmiter. “We survived the 2008 Great Recession, the dot-com crash in 2000 and the infamous Y2K crisis of 1999.”

FestivalNet.com is the most comprehensive festival and event web resource in North America, connecting artists, musicians, food vendors, promoters, festival-goers and service providers. It started as a 2,000-event downloadable PDF in 1996. Today, it is a user-friendly, highly functional, well-trafficked site of 750,000+ monthly visitors and 26,000+ events. Add to that an online marketplace, a festival business social networking community, advanced web tools & search features, promoter & member resources, advertising opportunities and a festival biz directory, and you start to see what they have been doing all these years!

So what is the foundation of FN’s 18-year survival? Co-owner Connie Morris sums it up to “common sense and karma.”

NEW VIDEO BY THE B.A.D.

THE B.A.D., real name Kash Chaudhary, was inspired by his own story; growing up at the intersection of the 1980s and 90s in Britain as the son of an immigrant, the talented rapper used his confusion over his dual identity as a source of inspiration. Growing up in North West London he never truly understood where ‘home’ was which resulted in dissociation with both countries; realising he was neither classified as English in England nor a Pakistani in Pakistan. THE B.A.D. has experienced the true depths of the Asian immigrant experience in the UK, suffering discrimination from both facets of his identity.

IAMX RE-EMERGES FOR AN INTIMATE ONLINE PERFORMANCE

“I’ve been sick, broke and reclusive. Now I am healing.” So says IAMX mastermind Chris Corner about the last year of his life after being diagnosed with a debilitating and career-threatening case of chronic insomnia. While most artists would throw in the towel and call it a day, Corner is instead learning how to adapt this new lifestyle in order to once again create music for his fans and, most importantly, for himself. On Saturday, May 31, 2014, Corner will be returning to the spotlight, albeit a quieter and more intimate one. He’ll be performing tracks from his pivotal debut album KISS + SWALLOW and broadcasting it live online via StageIt.

“All IAMX songs were written on a guitar or a piano,” he explains. “I thought it might be nice to play those songs how they were written, so I have decided to attempt a small online acoustic performance.” To be broadcast from his newfound home of Los Angeles, CA, Corner will revisit the lushness of his 2004 debut and strip it down to its barest nature. “I’ll be using an acoustic guitar, a loop pedal and some fx, hopefully to create a more interesting sound than just a standard unplugged show.”

The performance will be streamed live via StageIt at https://www.stageit.com/IAMX

ANIMAL LOVER ‘GUILT’ ALBUM OUT MAY 20TH + “NEIGHBORS

‘Guilt’ is Animal Lover’s second LP and first with Learning Curve Records. This six song album is a tight fist of fury, using background noise – faucets dripping, hand claps, guitars scratching on cymbals to create gloomy post-punk. Drawing further influence from the ,likes of The Velvet Underground, Cows, Wipers, the Beatles, The Ex, and Wire, it has a vibrant, no-wave musical feel.   Industrial waste.   Future Shock. Jazz.   Animal Lover pummels anything in their path of audio destruction.

RAY TARANTINO POSTS TWO SINGLES FROM NEW ALBUM

Where the so-damn-American power of Americana blends with the so-bloody-British immediacy of pop, that’s where you’ll find Ray Tarantino. His New Album, Good Things Will Happen (Tiny Drum Records) is a tribute to the American dream: the story of a guy who walked a road of trial, carrying nothing but a good dose of courage. Against all odds Ray Tarantino carved a tunnel through the mountain of possibilities. With no plan B, he has weaved together themes of hope, love, and reaching for the stars.

His father was a Sicilian diamond dealer; his mother a Tuscan countess. Born in the north of Italy and raised in the UK, Ray brings an international sensuality to Americana music. Ray’s lyrics are written with a deliberate pleasure in playing with words, and he seems to savor every word as they seep through his lips. If it was possible to make love to music, Ray would have broken through that boundary long ago. His passionate guitar playing and singing pierce through the coldness and darkness of lost love to warm the heart and excite the imagination.

TALKFINE NEW VIDEO “DANCE LIKE THIS”

TalkFine’s latest ear candy “Dance Like This” puts the fantasy front and center. Recruiting the sultry club grooves of old-school Usher hits with the 80’s pop flair of Hall & Oates–and perhaps a hint of boy band charm–the duo stocks the track with as much attitude and swagger as they can muster. Brought to life by director Liann Kaye, the accompanying music video displays an exuberant version of dance crew choreography and kaleidoscopic visuals that animate the duo’s lush pop harmonies and irresistible electro beats. While some may wonder “Are these guys serious?” a quick read between the lines catches the uncontrolled smiles, outbursts of laughter, and deliberate silliness that make TalkFine so uniquely likable, even beyond their catchy tunes. You can try to resist them, but why would you want to when pop music can be this fun?

NICUMO VIDEO “DIFFERENCE”

Nicumo is a melodic rock/metal band from Ylivieska, Finland. The band was founded in 2007 by a couple of friends. Fairly soon the band began to make their own songs by putting the guitarists’ song ideas to good use. During the first couple of years the band went without a name and invested in practising and making songs.

The line-up of the band changed frequently until 2010, and as the line-up regularized, their musical style, too, reached its best form. In the same year, the band started to go by the name of Nicumo.

WIRE: SMLH POSTS “NEON VISIONS”

SMLH is the solo project of 17 year-old Hillsborough, NC native Sam Higgins. The project began as merely an accumulation of off-kilter 4-track demos that were recorded while he was in seventh grade. However, what was once cathartic regurgitation inspired by middle school goofiness and angst eventually grew into a more developed solo endeavor. Influenced heavily by the southern punk rock ethos of North Carolina legends the Flat Duo Jets as well as the hypnotic bedroom stylings of Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox, the nature of SMLH’s output is hard to put a finger on at times; his early 2014 release Singles Vol. 1 features as many nihilistically loud “fake songs” as it does introspective and hazy pop tunes. SMLH’s favorite things are Seinfeld, Cheerwine, ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel, Adidas Sambas, short-scale guitars, and dad jokes.
