SLOTHRUST “ELECTRIC FUNERAL” (BLACK SABBATH COVER)
Slothrust continues to garner fans left and right. After two amazing performances for Record Store Day, the band will be hopping on a new adventure with Austin rocker Ben Kweller.
Slothrust will be joining Ben Kweller on his Northeast dates as part of their tour in support of their new record Of Course You Do, released on Ba Da Bing Records. Slothrust’s 90’s inspired blues-rock, their heartfelt (and intense) lyrics and Leah Wellbaum’s androgynous power vocals will be an exciting match to Kweller’s sincere folk-rock. The band will travel from Boston to DC for this run of dates, and will stop in their hometown, New York City, to play at Bowery Ballroom. See below for full dates.
Before they hit the road, the Brooklyn trio presents their newest video paying homage to Black Sabbath with a cover of “Electric Funeral”. Wellbaum’s shredding and performance is dark and heavy, an amazing tribute to the Prince of Darkness. Their video was recorded and produced in collaboration with Brooklyn’s Wreckroom Records – check it out, love it, and don’t forget to share it

WIRE: POPMATTERS PREMIERES THE SAFES NEW ALBUM ‘RECORD HEAT’
Brothers Frankie, Patrick, and Michael O’Malley are The SAFES. Their father, a working musician, record collector and all around music lover filled the house with live sounds, great records (Little Richard, Magic Sam, & Buck Owens…) and an array of musical instruments. This environment ultimately led to the development of this very special band. The SAFES have that unique chemistry that comes when talented siblings form a band (think Kinks, AC/DC, Everly Brothers, Beach Boys). This chemistry fuels The SAFES’ records as well as their live shows.

WIRE: FREE EP FROM ZION I
Composed of rapper MC Zumbi and producer AMP Live, Libations is part two of their free EP trilogy. The duo previously released part one of the album, entitled Master of Ceremonies. In creating the first part, MC Zumbi says, “We took it back to ground zero in creating these songs. The sole purpose of the emcee is to energize, invigorate and guide the listener to a higher state of mind, whether that be reflection, relaxation or enlightenment.” Switching gears, the duo explains that Libations is completely different. Zumbi explains, “This project was heavily influenced by one of my best friends passing away suddenly. His death put me in a mood to really analyze my life and how short this existence really can be. It opened my eyes and heart to both the ugliness and beauty of what we experience while alive.” Hence, Libations broods with reflection and deep emotion. “To me, libation is when you honor someone by pouring out your brew before you sip, it’s a sort of prayer. On this EP, I poured out some liquor for my homie, as well as my family, and myself.” Aside from production by AMP Live, the EP also features production from Headnodic and newcomer Featherload, as well as features with rappers Mr Lif, Sadat X, and Opio from Souls of Mischief.

WIRE: BLACK LIPS VIDEO “FUNNY”
Black Lips have shared a new video for “Funny”, an infectious glam rocker from recent album Underneath the Rainbow. Director David Markey (Sonic Youth, Black Flag, At the Drive In) tapped into his childhood memories for a video filmed at the Bob Baker Marionette Theater (by some accounts the oldest puppet theater in the country). The band is flanked by dancing puppets, some decades old, leading to particularly chilling scene where Cole tries to breastfeed a doll dancing beside him. Check it out at MTVu.com and every hour on the hour on MTVu.

WIRE: NEW SONG “(FOR A WHILE) I COULDN’T PLAY MY GUITAR LIKE A MAN” LEAKED VIA JACK BLACK’S FACEBOOK PAGE
Listening to Marvelous Clouds, Aaron Freeman’s 2012 debut under his own name, fans might have felt that he was ignoring an elephant in his room-a drug-and-alcohol-related onstage flame-out that made viral headlines the year before. But Clouds, a deceptively chill Rod McKuen covers record, was just a warm-up for the artist once known as Gene Ween. In the opening minutes of FREEMAN, the self-titled debut from his new band, Freeman addresses addiction and its aftermath with the combination of merciless self-inventory and artful songcraft that earned Ween one of the most devoted fan bases in contemporary pop. This song, the unmistakably autobiographical “Covert Discretion,” is a quiet shocker. “Save your judgments for someone else,” Freeman sings. “Be grateful I saved me from myself.”

With ’80s synths and a variety of vocal pitch corrections, he renders his audience with an unusual yet uniquely vibrant sound, and addresses themes such as the fast life in “Foghty” and “Hiyah,” as well as his loyal pot priorities in tracks including “Stress” and “Trackstars” where he sings “hey, hey, hey, smoke weed everyday.” With the exception of the Friendzone-produced track “TFZ,” the entire album was produced by Tynethys himself. Nettwerk Music Group is excited to announce the signing of Australian singer-songwriter Stu Larsen to its label roster. Stu will release his debut full-length album, Vagabond, July 15th via Nettwerk Records (pre order May 13).
Vagabond was recorded at Sydney’s esteemed Linear Studios and was co-produced by Chris Vallejo and friend/label-mate Mike Rosenberg (aka Passenger). A few years ago, Stu left his small town in Queensland, Australia and embraced a life as a bit of a vagabond himself, exploring and embracing opportunities as they came. He has been touring, recording, driving friends tour vans and pretty much anything else that allows him to continue his travels. The album expresses the dichotomy of Stu’s life on the road — his amazing journeys and beautiful observations along the way; contrasted with an inevitable sense of loneliness. He attracted new fans in North America and beyond during his extensive run as support for Passenger in 2013.

OWENSTONE SINGLE “SUMMER LANE”
“Summer Lane” is a kind of anthem illustrating the innate calling for departure and escape from conventional life. We all feel it at times, and Owen has probably acted on it more than most. He’s quit film school, which was paid for by a state scholarship, just to hitchhike and write songs for seven months. He also intentionally went to jail at age 18 just to see what it was like. Owen has made a living designing film sets and singing and writing in the studio for Japanese pop music, as well as being a Craigslist handyman. One of the only consistencies in Owen’s life has been the companionship of his dog.

CONTENDER.COM COMES OUT SWINGING
Contender.com, the first peer-to-peer secondary ticketing website that’s free, fair and flexible has officially launched today. Founded by industry veterans Wes Brodsky and Ken Blaustein in 2012, Contender.com is an online marketplace where buyers and sellers safely negotiate using their PayPal accounts, to agree on what a ticket’s really worth, without dodgy middleman or baked-in fees.
“We started our company because the secondary ticket industry is broken and inefficient,” say Brodsky, Contender.com’s CEO. “Buyers are blindly overpaying for tickets and sellers are losing revenue due to price speculation, all the while the ticketing behemoths are lining their pockets. Users are intentionally blocked on resale marketplaces from knowing each other’s level of price flexibility, causing tickets to either go unsold, or binding one side of the transaction to a competitive disadvantage.”
