San Francisco’s The M Machine is primed to drop their first official release, a two-song maxi-single that spans the wide spectrum of tempo as well as popular tastes in electronic and indie music. Appropriately, the songs will surface October 18th on OWSLA, the venture launched by Skrillex earlier this year.
Both tracks from the eponymous Promise Me A Rose Garden / Glow are awash in telltale “chillwave” lo-fi ambience, leaning on vocal lines that tug at themes of young love and madness, prodded along by a persistent, thudding kick drum. “Glow” adheres to more traditional pop tempo and song structure, combining thick pads of synths and delicate falsetto vocals into an instantly classic hook. “Promise Me A Rose Garden” pairs the aggressive low-end and technical wizardry that’s quickly become a pillar of the label’s aesthetic with melodic, roaring 20’s-style vocals at a more rapid clip.
