WIRE: AWNING NEW SINGLE VIA EARMILK
Birthed from a longstanding friendship that began while studying music at NYU, Awning is a wildly refreshing contrast to all that is stale in electronic music. It comes as no surprise that Jon Sheldrick and Luke Smith, the duo behind the outfit, are both classically trained musicians who have dabbled in the likes of opera, off-Broadway musicals, and jam bands. Folk songs written years ago by the pair in a dingy Brooklyn apartment are still present in Awning’s repertoire today, if only shells of their former selves. Influenced by acts like The Books, Stephen Wilkinson’s Bibio and Will Wiesenfeld’s Baths, Awning brings electronic music to a sophisticated level by simply scaling it back.

WIRE: TANGERINE DEBUT NEW SONG “NOTHING BETTER”

The digital single, produced by Martin Feveyear (Mudhoney, Mark Lanegan, Damian Jurado), will be released on April 15th via Fin Records and includes the exclusive unreleased b-side “Northern Line”. On the new single Tangerine capture “the whimsy often found on IFC sketch shows and in Euro twee acts like Camera Obscura and Lucky Soul – or, you know, The Cardigans,” writes Buzzworthy, going on to say, “There’s a definite Pacific Northwest edge to the band’s plucky rhythm section, which thumps and fidgets with kick drums and a beard-scratchy bassline. Frontwoman Marika Justad sings with just a sprinkle of sass as she teases her way through romantic lines…”

RADIO MOSCOW SHARES THEIR FIRST SINGLE “DEATH OF A QUEEN”
On June 17th Radio Moscow will release their fourth studio album, aptly entitled Magical Dirt. The band’s fountainhead Parker Griggs, along with partners-in-crime Anthony Meier (bass) and Paul Marrone (drums), have cultivated yet another blues-rock masterpiece that crossbreeds late ’60s psych-rock and face-melting guitar histrionics with the foundation-crumbling rhythms from early ’70s hard-rock, and even includes a couple of harrowing tracks built from the bedrock of rural Delta blues. But more than merely digging up fossils from rock’s revered past, Griggs & Co. manage to translate the myths of rock-n-roll’s golden age into modern day truths for a new, younger generation.

WIRE: NEW MINIATURE TIGERS VIA NYLON
The sound is important but nothing is more important than the feeling of the sound. When Charlie Brand (vocals, guitar) was writing the newest Miniature Tigers record, he looked to the sum of his musical influences for inspiration. “I wanted to make something like Weezer’s Blue Album–not exactly the album, but the feeling of listening to that album at age whatever. Something with that feeling that could connect with people.” That’s how the band had started, after all: When he and founding member Rick Schaier (keys) connected over Myspace in the mid-’00s through their love of the same bands. After a few albums, they brought on Algernon Quashie (guitar) and Brandon Lee (bass) to complete the band.

MALATESE POST “OSTRICH”
The following is from Luke Manning’s review of Malatese’s “Animal Relief” from Charlottesville, VA blog Nailgun Media:
The first Malatese show I ever saw happened at the Harrisonburg townhouse they lived in about three years ago, in-between winter and spring of 2011. It was a sloppy, soulful performance for a crowd barely reaching the double digits; the bass guitar went out at one point, Jon’s cymbals were busted-up pieces of trash, and most of the members of the band were fucked up on one thing or another (as was I); but their noisy, high-energy performance still sticks in my head as one of the craziest sets I’ve experienced. Over the years since then I’ve seen many a Malatese show, and I’ve never been disappointed; in fact, I’ve been delighted to see them mature into the most consistent and talented purveyors of punk weirdness to come out of Harrisonburg.
