Taliwhoah (NME, DIY, Complex, The Fader) speaks up for women in her new ‘Meds’ Video

Born in a big artistic family to a British-Nigerian-Lebanese mom and Jamaican dad, Talitha Cross had a very roundabout introduction to music. Both her mom Toyin Adekale and auntie Maizie Williams were in the influential band Boney M, who according to many including the Independent helped define the late disco-pop 1970s era. Therefore Tali since she was little would spend hours watching and studying their VHS tapes and learning from the very best.

This year, Taliwhoah signed to Rostrum Records and released her single ‘Details’, which gained praise and support from the likes of DIY, The Quietus, The Fader, Complex, Earmilk and NME to name a few.

TheKnuBlack explore true friendship on “The Friend (Hokage)” video

“The Friend (Hokage)” is a part of the larger theme of family in our album: Ohana. The song explores the dynamic of being that true friend that both sticks by friends at their worst moments but also pulls friends out of dark times. The song begins by talking about friends who “die young, but they still walk around” and then the first verse moves to talking about how we ourselves run the risk of social death (i.e. loneliness) when we try to face life alone. The pain of feeling misunderstood or like an outcast makes us all want to “pave [our] own way out” and “fight the villain all alone by [ourselves].” This song is a reminder that we cannot do it alone. We need “The Friend” who will stand by us, and we need to be okay admitting that.

The chorus is undeniably infectious, leaning into the pop aspects of this indie/alt synth three piece. Give ‘Signs’ a listen, if you’ve ever been lost in the city or in your mind, this song will leave you feeling found.
