SKOPE NEWS FOR FEBRUARY 16, 2017

First New EP from Big Mother Gig in 20 Years!

Milwaukee-based indie rock pioneers, Big Mother Gig, released the Almost Primed EP, their first new music in 20 years, today. With one foot rooted in their origins on the LoFi, indie rock scene that exploded out of the midwest in the 90s and the other in the contemporary post-punk rock revival, Big Mother Gig has exhibited none of the rust you would have expected from a band that hasn’t written together in two decades. Instead, Almost Primed is a cohesive, addictive sonic assault complete with fuzzed out guitars and driving percussion. At its core, the band stripped away any sort of musical additives and put together a collection of six tracks that use the classic drums/bass/vocals combination. The result is an emotive, hard rock collection that will stay lodged in your head for at least the next few weeks. You can stream the record on Spotify now and download it from Amazon, iTunes and most of your other favorite download services.

Take, for example, ‘Inner Dissolution’… Is it for fans of Weekend Nachos, or for fans of Crowbar? Well… why can’t it be for both?”

SUPER SNAKE Ruins Valentine’s Day with the Release of ‘Leap of Love’

With the arrival of Valentine’s Day, I think it is safe to say that many of us (regardless of relationship status) are simply not ‘feeling the love’. Maybe it’s the state of the world in general or maybe your favorite sports team recently faced a devastating loss, or maybe you’re just genuinely lonely. Whatever’s got you down, we feel your pain, and we understand the anguish that is tormenting your mortal soul. We get it, it’s tough out there in the big world.

RYDEN “MURDERER”

Ryden releases a haunting orchestral trap masterpiece perfectly timed for Valentine’s Day. Ironic in the sense that this track is more of an anti-love story as it tells a beautifully metaphorical tale of self-realization and revenge. Written with painstaking detail from a personal story of heartache and ends with a resounding threat to all. Along side her dark and alluring vocals, Ryden shows of her characteristic soaring orchestral elements. Massive brass and violins laced intricately together with a haunting piano line played throughout.

Ezkiel Unveils New Sound With Accompanying Single “Around”

Elusive singer/songwriter Ezkiel tells a cautionary tale about a mistrusting relationship in his new single, “Around.” A soulful tune produced by fellow Chicago native nïko, “Around” points to a new sound Ezkiel is flirting with. “Around” presents a mesh of modern R&B and pop, and will likely resonate with all fans to the likes of Bryson Tiller, PARTYNEXTDOOR, and Justin Beiber. The lyrics reflect Ezkiel’s departure from a troubled relationship, which is painted as inescapable, yet seemingly irresistible. The young artist tells his significant other not to come back crying to him “When I’m on a high and you’re feeling down” which may elude to the aftermath of success from his self-titled EP, released earlier this year. While his previous releases illustrate a dark, cohesive aura of recklessness, it is undeniable from the sound of this release that Ezkiel is only headed upwards – musically and mentally.

Jessica Dennison + Jones Premiere Single “Confines” via Stereogum

There is something indefinably timeless about Jessica Dennison + Jones’ self-titled debut. It’s not the result of some quaint recording process or of precious, sepia-toned songwriting, but a quality that lies outside of the album’s minimal grooves, layered vocals, and contemplative, naturalistic lyrics. Perhaps what is timeless about Jessica Dennison + Jones comes from the connection between two friends (both, serendipitously, named Jessica) who have been playing music together for over a decade and who have finally found their perfect place. It’s a creative destination that most bands never find, let alone on their first albums—a place where vision and vulnerability are in perfect balance, and where the Jessicas’ creative bond results in songs so deeply personal and mysterious that we as listeners can’t help but assign our own stories to them.

In a time where America appears to be divided more than ever, it would sometimes seem as if the people as a whole have absolutely nothing in common. While some focus solely on the trial, Nomis offers us an alternative. A reminder that its always darkest before the dawn. A mantra professing that our past choices and current predicaments do not define our future. This collection is a comprehensive, 4-CD curation of T’Pau’s Virgin Records career: all those glorious singles from the mighty, quadruple platinum debut album ‘Bridge Of Spies’ (’87,) the two Top Ten albums which followed, the platinum-selling ‘Rage’ (’88) and Top 10 gold-selling ‘The Promise’ (’91,) plus a glimmering collector’s grotto of B-sides, remixes, tantalising rarities and unreleased demo versions of the songs which lit up the late-’80s skyline like luminous shooting stars. In the era’s dominant teen-pop landscape T’Pau were a proper band, their stadium-level ambition powering into realisation via one of the most distinctive vocalists in history, Carol’s singular force-of-nature tone somehow merging, stunningly, the youthful euphoria of the ingénue with the depths of a woman’s wisdom.

UK Young Astronaut and their new single

Young Astronaut is an indie 4-piece from New Forest. Having gained fans in both the UK as well as China with their debut LP ‘Fawn’, last year saw them perform at a wide variety of venues, from London’s Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen to numerous bars and bookshops across Beijing, Chengdu and Hong Kong.

They are now back and ready to release their new album called ‘A Gold Frontier’. By teaming up with Grammy-award winning Geoff Swan (White Lies, Ed Sheeran, Bastille), Young Astronaut have decided to take it upon themselves to unite the various meanings of “indie” by intertwining them all together. Through linking the numerous indie sub-genres across 11 beautifully crafted pieces of music, the band takes the listener on an unpredicted sonic journey, beginning with the opening number called “Chasing El Dorado”.???????

Danny Barnes Releases All Acoustic Homage to Don Stover

Danny Barnes is already known as an iconic American musician, a banjo playing innovator who’s earned high praise from everybody from Bill Frisell and Dave Matthews to Steve Martin, who presented Danny with the Prize for Excellence in Banjo in 2015. From the days with his groundbreaking Austin band, the Bad Livers, to his two decade solo career experimenting with electronic music, jazz, old time string band music and more, he’s a genre bending, rule breaking original who prefers to color outside the lines.

Now, with Stove Up, out March 3, 2017, he’s showing us that it was always a choice, that he’s always had the chops to play straight ahead bluegrass banjo with the best of them. With a top-flight band backing him up, Danny turns in an amazing set of tunes that demonstrate his respect for tradition and his commitment to his own musical voice.

SABRINA CLAUDIO SETS ALL THE RIGHT R&B VIBES WITH “CONFIDENTLY LOST”

Through her sultry and seductive soul style, Sabrina Claudio slips in and out of musings on lust, moments of longing, and meditations on love over a soundtrack comprised of minimal 90s-style R&Beats, spacious noir jazz, and Bossa Nova-induced rhythms. During 2016, the Miami-born and Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter independently unveiled her debut, Confidently Lost EP, on Soundcloud which in just under six months, has quietly amassed over 3 million cumulative plays. It’s the natural product of a 19-year love affair with music for the half Cuban and half Puerto Rican siren. Raised in Miami, she fell in love with dance first as she simultaneously discovered salsa, meringue, and what she refers to as “my old school R&B” i.e. Mariah Carey, Destiny’s Child, Usher, and Boyz II Men courtesy of dad. With Confidently Lost receiving a wide release in March 2017, Sabrina has only just begun to captivate.

Abby & the Myth VR Video

The album’s first single “Delicate Parade” was a top track on Today’s Top Tracks, and the new single “Grey Halls” has an amazing virtual reality video that allows VR goggle users to feel as if they are at an unplugged #concertforone standing in the middle of the band, as they play the song acoustically. It’s the most modern technology meeting the original music performance style. Regular watchers can mouse around the video to face the various band members as they play.

Strange Familia Release “Ms. Badblood”

“Ms. Badblood” exemplifies the influences that have created Strange Familia’s debut album, coming this spring. Filled with soul, funk, 80’s beats, and pop elements, the track’s electronic elements blend effortlessly with the guitar and bass lines Garrett and Brecken use to make this track a serious bop. The Music Ninja premiered the single, stating “This dynamic creation is not your average song, as it hits all the right notes for fans of many differing genres. It’s been a while since Strange Familia have put out a tune, so it’s nice to hear them come back with something so incredible.”

HORSENECK: Heavy Trip LP From Post Hardcore/Sludge Unit Featuring Current And Past Members Of Will Haven And Chelsea Wolfe Streaming At Decibel

In celebration of its release, today Decibel Magazine is hosting a full stream of the record before you can buy it issuing, “Album opener ‘Bird Worried’ features an organ, bluesy guitar parts and a combination of clean and harsh vocals. It highlights HORSENECK’s biggest strength on Heavy Trip — their music isn’t what might be expected and it can be silly, but they bring it together well. There are more aggressive cuts on the album too, like ‘Lester Vitalis’ and ‘No Gods,’ that rely on thicker, fuzzier riffs but HORSENECK never fail to deliver something memorable.”
