KENDRICK LAMAR JOINS BJ THE CHICAGO KID ON BJ’S SONG “THE NEW CUPID”
BJ The Chicago Kid’s Motown debut In My Mind is available February 19 . The album features a few leaders of the new school including Kendrick Lamar, Chance The Rapper, Isabella and Big K.R.I.T., but it has some serious old-school flavor. Before looking to his future, he took it back with an EP of D’Angelo covers. On “In My Mind” BJ overflows with soul on this joint, with his falsetto punctuating the retro horns and bass.

“TIGER ASYLUM” REMIXES
Our first taste of new Brooklyn trio Tiger Tooth came in the form of a techno producing pomeranian and a sassy, club-going baby doll featured in the band’s lead music video for “Tiger Asylum.” Comprised of Johnny Siera and synthesist/producer William Broussard of the wildly successful art-punk band The Death Set, and visual artist Sofia Szamosi, Tiger Tooth unites the three member’s unique outlook on visual aesthetic and commitment to “dark, slimy” techno masterpieces off their forthcoming “Tiger Tiger Tooth Tooth” EP out March 18th.
BEN HOUGE PRESENTS “FOOD & OPERA”
Ben Houge shares his concept of “food opera,” a unique pairing of music and gastronomy that presents a meal as a narrative medium, incorporating a thirty-channel speaker array and techniques from video game soundtracks to achieve an unprecedented level of synchronization between the senses of taste and hearing. In a series of collaborations with chef Jason Bond of Bondir restaurant in Cambridge, Ben has used this new genre to explore the phenomenological links between the senses, interpret poetry, and tell the stories of local farmers. More recently, he has composed music drawing on recent developments in crossmodal psychology to affect the perception of taste at dinners designed by chef Jozef Youssef of Kitchen Theory in London. Ben has lectured on this work at academic conferences and at Oxford University, as well as at some of the world’s leading restaurants, including The Fat Duck in Bray, England, and Mugaritz in San Sebastián, Spain. Last summer, Ben taught a course at Berklee College of Music exploring the technology and aesthetics of pairing food with sound, and students presented their final projects in one of Quique Dacosta’s Michelin-starred restaurants. Ben is currently working on a new food opera to be presented by St. Paul-based new music ensemble Zeitgeist in May 2016. For more food opera, see Ben’s TEDx Berklee Valencia presentation.

DON’T CHASE FELIX NEW VIDEO
Don’t Chase Felix is the musical brainchild of artist/producer Justin Khoury. After spending three years in the Richmond, VA folk/rock band, The Northerners, Khoury decided it was time for a change. This change came in the form of Don’t Chase Felix, a project stemmed from getting in the studio and exploring. The unique name is an ode to the type of project this has been. Felix, the Latin word for happy, is at the base of it all. As Khoury describes, “I’ve always lived a life that is different than most, and sought to find happiness on an atypical life path. Don’t Chase Felix is this idea that there is more than the standard ‘American Dream,’ cookie cutter representation of life and happiness. It says that it’s okay to live a life that goes against the grain, to pursue what makes you happy in ways that don’t always make sense to others.” Don’t Chase Felix is the musical equivalent of pursuing a life outside of the mold.

ANNE WALSH NEW ALBUM LATE MARCH
The sultriness inherent in Brazilian jazz rhythms enhances the fresh and vibrant pop melodies on soprano song siren Anne Walsh’s “Brand New,” which bodes to cast a bewitching spell of beauty and romance this spring upon its March 18 release from A To Z Music. The timing is serendipitous for the twelve-tracker – thoughtfully produced and arranged by Walsh and GRAMMY®-nominated arranger-pianist Tom Zink – that has lyrical themes about rebirth, restoration and rejuvenation as well as juxtaposing the splendor of nature and romantic love. The set list is a mix of new songs and standards that offer hope and continues Walsh’s tradition of writing lyrics for a pair of classic instrumentals.
Sharing a mutual passion for the elegance and sensuality of Brazilian jazz, Walsh and Zink – married both creatively and in real life – showcase their affinity for recordings bolstered by the spontaneity and improvisational spark between first-call musicians. The duo also put considerable care into their meticulous arrangements.
ACTOR BRADLEY COOPER REGISTERS AS BONE MARROW DONOR IN SUPPORT OF DELETE BLOOD CANCER
Delete Blood Cancer DKMS announced today that Academy Award nominated actor Bradley Cooper has registered as a bone marrow donor and is joining the organization’s efforts to register more donors.
Katharina Harf, Co-Founder of Delete Blood Cancer DKMS introduced Cooper to Anthony Daniels, a young man who has been battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a form of blood cancer for five years. Cooper was inspired to help Anthony and others who are also battling the disease. Cooper, a donor himself, is helping to raise awareness about the importance of registering as a donor.
“When I lost my father to cancer, I lost my best friend, my hero and my confident. It was devastating for my whole family. When I first heard Anthony’s story, I knew that it was time I joined the fight against blood cancer and become a donor,” said Cooper. “When I signed up to be a donor, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the process was quick and pain free – a simple swab of my cheek. I hope that I can be a match for someone, and inspire others to register as well.”

MELAENA CADIZ NEW SINGLE
“It’s hard to make a clean escape,” Melaena Cadiz admits early on in her new album, Sunfair. But it’s been on her mind nonetheless. The songwriter, long based out of New York City, made a break for the West Coast in 2015 and on Sunfair she’s managed a breakthrough as well. Cadiz has honed her technique and striped away any excess, leaving her haunting vocals and evocative storytelling unadorned, but also unencumbered.

THE WESTERN SONS “SEND MY LOVE”
The Western Sons started when Garrett Carr, Tyler Cohenour and Blake Rigdon began playing and producing music together at the University of South Florida. It was bed-room musicianship. Songwriting. Growing – and finding a sound that represented all. Kyle started playing drums because we wanted to bring our songs to life and play live – been our drummer ever since.

ELIZA SHADDAD “RUN”
Title track Run, revealed today, harnesses that power of provocation; “Run from me far and fast as you can before I ruin you”, Shaddad cries. It’s a deeply confessional sentiment, damning and yet liberating, and as unyielding as it is helplessly fragile.
“This song has a life of its own, and I think half our total studio time was probably spent just trying to tame it. It’s merciless in parts, musically, and lyrically, and a total beast to play live; getting to the end in one piece can actually be kind of cathartic.”

BENT SHAPES “WHAT WE DO IS PUBLIC”
“‘What We Do Is Public’ is a takeoff on “What We Do Is Secret” by The Germs, which I always assumed was about preserving punk rock and the underground music scene as a haven for misfits who felt more comfortable there,” explains Bent Shapes frontman Ben Potrykus of the Boston band’s newest single from their Slumberland Records debut, Wolves of Want out March 11, 2016. “You can’t go to a show in 2016 without seeing someone who is so focused on documenting the event with pictures and videos they’re seamlessly uploading to the internet that they don’t seem to be watching or listening to the show as its happening.”

MIKEY DOLLAZ MIXTAPE
In a rare case where drill rap meets cutting edge electronic (and actually works), Chicago rapper Mikey Dollaz’s Picture Me Rollin includes all original production from an A-list collection of emerging EDM and rap producers including Strict Face, Obey City, Sonny Digital, Dun Deal, Honorable C.N.O.T.E, Anti-G and Planet Mu’s Silk Road Assassins. Debuted by FACT Mag and delivering everything from a trap ballads (“Girl I Want You,” “Fuck Me Right,” “New to Me”) to trunk-rattling electronic-tinged bangers (“4 Pills,” “Commas”) to party anthems (“Flat or Molly,” “NOW”), Mikey Dollaz proves to be something of a rap chameleon, adapting to a variety of styles and tempos while maintaining a Danny Brown-esque level of energy.

VHS “WHEELCHAIRS” VIA FADER
Violent Human System is better known by their acronym VHS. And while Violent Human System does seem like an appropriately nihilistic name for a pessimistic punk band, VHS also serves as a good indication of the new Seattle band’s grainy aesthetic, early ‘80s nods, and analog inclinations. Imagine watching an early Killing Joke video on a deteriorated VCR, and you get a good idea of VHS’s general vibe. This isn’t some kitschy throwback, though. The band’s modus operandi follows the economic pragmatism of punk’s formative years. Eschewing proper studio recordings and the increasingly prohibitive vinyl format, VHS got their start by cranking out home-recorded cassette tapes. The results were the Art Decay, Everything Looks Boring and Vultures & Hungry Spirits cassettes, which conjured the primitive howl of Dead Moon, the driving wallop of The Wipers, and the gloomy deathrock of Rudimentary Peni in one fell swoop.

THE BY GODS “MISS IT”
The By Gods’ tour has the band traversing the Midwest and East coast through March. Having already garnered comparisons to Bob Mould and Superchunk, the bands’ hook-laden garage rock is respectfully reminiscent of their early to mid-90’s alternative predecessors, which Consequence of Sound says “…bears all the hallmarks of “classic” alternative rock.”
CATFISH AND THE BOTTLEMEN TEAM WITH DAVE SARDY FOR A NEW SINGLE
Produced by Dave Sardy, the track is the first new material from the band since the release of debut album ‘The Balcony’ in 2014. Annie Mac premiered it on BBC Radio 1 “Hottest Record In The World” and the song will feature on their new album, due later this year. Oh, and please wish the Llandudno, Wales, lads luck on their nomination for the BRIT Award for British Breakthrough Act, announced February 24th.

BARDUS “SMOKE BATH”
Offering a mixed bag of psychedelic tactics, parts of Stella Porta meander off into the cosmos in no rush to get anywhere, while others are much more direct in their delivery; it’s rampaging opening track “Smoke Bath” is one of these movements. Just recently, Philadelphia’s quartet Mock Suns have unveiled their third single Here From Your Rooftop – which will be featured on their forthcoming release Stay True (due out March 8 – via Good Behavior Records).
“[Here From Your Rooftop] straddles the line between Ariel Pink-esque AM pop and the earnest balladeering of artists like Matt Pond. There are some psychedelic flourishes of lead guitar and then a long, winding outro for good measure. Mock Suns could be the next great indie band out of Philly.” – Adam Morgan, Surviving the Golden Age

“This was a long and overdue opportunity to work with Glyn Johns again, and also, incidentally, the fortieth anniversary of ‘Slowhand’!” said Eric Clapton.
MATTHEW CHAIM “UNTITLED”
This song is called “Untitled” because it’s song about writing songs. At some point, all songs are “untitled”. Featuring production from Noah Barer & Cavewerk the track elegantly floats by as piano and strings swell, smothered in bass. All the while Chaim’s relaxed new-age hip hop flow takes centre stage.
