PARROT HEADS IN KEY WEST
In the 1970s internationally acclaimed entertainer Jimmy Buffett wrote “I Have Found Me a Home” about Key West, describing riding his old red bike to “the bars and the beaches of my town.” Wednesday through Sunday, Oct. 29-Nov. 2, the island is to host several thousand of the entertainer’s Parrot Head fans for their 23rd annual Meeting of the Minds convention.
Titled “Havana Daydreamin'” after Buffett’s acclaimed 1976 album, the gathering celebrates his music and laidback lifestyle on the island credited with inspiring much of both.
A former Key West resident, Buffett flavored his classic songs with mentions of local landmarks including Fausto’s Food Palace and the Blue Heaven Restaurant, and characters like former mayor Captain Tony Tarracino and “pirate” Phil Clark. In the mid-1980s, he founded the original Margaritaville Store in the island city.

In March of 2014, Los Angeles singer-songwriter Mia Doi Todd spent ten days at the beautiful Estúdio El Rocha in São Paulo, Brazil and recorded an album of her favorite Brazilian songs – some famous, some obscure – all about nature. The album is entitled Floresta, or “Forest” in Portuguese, and was ust released on Mia’s label, City Zen Records, on September 16th of this year. The album features an all Brazilian band: Fabiano do Nascimento on seven-string nylon guitar, Maurício Takara and Rogério Martins on percussion, and Meno del Picchia on bass.

Warner Bros. Records (WBR) today announced that it has signed a global recording contract with legendary rap group Wu-Tang Clan, including RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa, and Cappadonna. As a group, Wu-Tang has sold over 6.5 million records in the US, while they’ve sold nearly 40 million records worldwide, including individual members’ album sales as well as group sales collectively. Speakeasy today premieres a video for one of the songs that did, an English-language version of “Esther.”
