Dallas, TX-based Americana singer-songwriter Evan Boyer has just released a must-listen of an Americana album, “The Devil in Me.” Boyer recently sat down with @skopemag to talk about this musically rich and lyrically deep collection of songs.
@skopemag: Tell us about your amazing new album.
Evan Boyer: Thanks for having me. The idea for an album came together when I went into the studio to record my first single, “Hearts on Fire.” During that session, we had some time to mess around and laid down some tracks for some other songs I had written. Nothing worth keeping but enough to push me to get back in the studio and put out an album. I knew I wanted to tell a more complete story and you can’t really do that with a song or two.
@skopemag: Tell us about the process of putting this album together.
Evan: Actually, I recorded this album twice. I won’t get into the weeds, but the first version didn’t meet my expectations, so I decided not to release it, which was a hard decision but the right one. Bradley Prakope, who produced the album, was what it needed. He brought new life to the album, and both of our visions completely aligned.
@skopemag: How did you come up with your album title?
Evan: That was the easiest decision because the whole album is, in one way or another, about the devil in me. Ironically, the actual track, “The Devil in Me,” is the only song that’s completely fictional and the only one that doesn’t touch upon my missteps or struggles or flaws.
@skopemag: What do you hope is the overall message of the album?
Evan: It’s okay to be human. It’s totally normal and okay to be flawed. Just keep at it. Apologize often and learn from the missteps.
@skopemag: Any tour plans?
Evan: I’ll be opening for Adam Hood in Anna, Texas on June 13th. We’ll be at Sundown at Granada in Dallas on June 29th for our album release show, and then I’ll be on tour with TimLightyear for the rest of the summer.
