Today beloved and prolific songwriter Chris Farren announces his incredible new album, Doom Singer, out on August 4 via Polyvinyl. Farren made his name recording with Jeff Rosenstock in Antarctigo Vespucci and now-defunct Floridian punk band Fake Problems, but all work under his own name has been created by Farren in self-described “miserable” isolation…until now. Doom Singer was produced, engineered and mixed by multi-instrumentalist/producer, and Jay Som mastermind Melina Duterte (who also performs on the record) in her Atwater Village studio. It was also written entirely with live drummer Frankie Impastato, and features Rosenstock on the occasional bass and saxophone.

These aren’t b-sides. The recordings began during sessions for Spoon’s Grammy-nominated album, Lucifer on the Sofa, but were left unfinished. Following the record’s release and at the tail end of a year-plus of intense touring, the band came back to the sketches with renewed energy and fresh perspective. The completed tracks retain a touch of Lucifer’s character – rock ‘n roll music, played in real-time – but stretch out hypnotically.

John Hewitt readily admits that every five years or so he gets restless to the point that he has to shake up his life in a radical way. In 2018 he moved from Toronto to Edmonton, and the change of scenery immediately influenced his output as a singer/songwriter. Although in many ways Hewitt is a classic troubadour—comfortable traveling alone and playing solo—his creative ambitions have expanded over the past few years as he’s settled into his home studio.

Much of Radio Red, the first full length album Laura Groves has released under her own name, was written, produced and recorded by Groves in her studio, watched over by two radio transmitting towers. “I became very drawn to them and they became like symbols to me; they were always awake, sending their messages, the red lights always came on at night and watched over whatever was going on in my life.” The album deals with themes of communication – missed and intercepted signals, chance meetings, synchronicities, the channels through which we try to express our true feelings, the outside interference that can get in the way and the joy of letting go and allowing the messages to flow freely.
