BLACK LUNG: new video “Death Grip” feat. Shawna Potter of War On Women
About the video: “Death Grip is a critique of the funeral industry and those who profit off grief and death. It’s not a secret that funeral homes often take advantage of people at their most vulnerable, charging exorbitant prices for caskets and services. We decided to invite our good friend Shawna Potter (the frontwoman of War On Women and a champion of progressive values) to write and sing the chorus, as well as star in the video. My vision for the music video was a 70s-style occult horror, equal parts creepy and campy, and I’m pretty proud of what we pulled off with a shoestring budget. We see our antagonist, “The Death Capitalist”, relishing in his wicked business, until Shawna’s character, “The Witch of Justice”, kidnaps him. She takes him to her lair, where her acolytes (the band) mete out his punishment: torture by the power of rock n’ roll. It was a ton of fun to create and Jordan Miller (cinematographer/Gypsy Cab Productions) really helped us achieve our vision with his expertise in horror filmmaking.”

Stockholm post-punk band V**gra Boys (**=ia for spam) return this week with new single “Troglodyte” from their recently announced album Cave World out July 8th via YEAR0001. Setting the tone thematically and sonically for the rest of the album, “Troglodyte” is a driving and upbeat exploration into the chaos and confusion of current events through the comparison of modern man with troglodytes (I.E. cave dwellers). Stewing on our current state of humanity, rife with violence and science-denial, headman Sebastian Murphy notes “People look down at apes as primitive life forms, but we’re just this horrible, lazy society killing each other and starting wars, while they’re able to love and feel. Does that make them the true ape or us?”

“I started writing ‘You Said It All’ during a time in my life when I found the things surrounding me were receding. The song was sparked late at night during an underground Mardi Gras parade and I found myself in a surreal world I didn’t recognize only blocks from my house. The first lines of the song came straight from that experience of being in a place I knew so well but seeing it as an unknown landscape full of danger and possibility. The original demo was built on sounds referencing back to 90s rap but when we arranged the song for The Revivalists it got a more live band treatment. FAME Studios is known for making hits in an era where everything was played live and you can feel it in the room. Recording “You Said It All” there inspired us to bring the same energy we put into our live shows into this version of the song,” shares drummer Andrew Campanelli.
