Rising Star Iris Gold Releases New Single, “Girl Pick Up Your Drum (GPUYD)” Today on Bay Street Records (Audio + Video)
The recording for GPUYD was completed between sessions at Stewart’s Bay Street Records Recording Studio in the Caribbean and Willie Mitchell’s Royal Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. The new track, produced and mixed by Stewart, also features him on Acoustic 6 String, Acoustic 12 String, Electric Guitar, Keyboards (Electric Piano), Percussion, and background vocals. The new album will be released under Stewart’s famed Bay Street Records imprint in February 2022.

“When the pandemic hit last year, we were literally stuck at home,” Pearl Clarkin explains. “My younger brother, Rafe Wester, is my roommate. He has always had a unique and rich bass voice, but was too active in high school and college to sit down to write, sing and record with me. In 2020, he literally had nothing else to do – I started teaching him guitar and we began writing songs together. As the months of solitude dragged on, we released some videos of us singing together and everyone on social media loved it. The idea of brother/sister duo went over very well and industry professionals were encouraging us to release music together. This is something I have always dreamed of. Rafe and I get along so well and have so much in common.”

Giving a Motor City history lesson over a Bay Area beat, Vezzo shares “Chamber Brothers,” his latest video single. Produced by The Mekanix, the legendary Oakland duo known for their glistening mob music instrumentals, “Chamber Brothers” furthers the deep connection between Detroit and the Bay, and Vezzo’s conversational drawl perfectly blends with the slinking bass and echoing synths. Referencing the Chamber Brothers, a notorious crew that ran Vezzo’s 6 Mile neighborhood in the 1980s, the new song finds Vezzo in an aggressive mood: “AR heavy on my shoulder, gotta aim this f*cker/Selling crack like it’s the ’80s, we’re the Chamber Brothers/Everything I got is profit, I came with nothin/30 round poking out the glock, like it hang on something.” In the video, directed by Boomin Filmz, Vezzo and his Iced Up Records associates spin the block in their foreign cars, each car with different colored rims, as Vezzo establishes his hustling bonafides.

Reflecting on the inspiration behind the song, founding member Jon Barca explains, “When I was younger I made some bad decisions that I regret, and through dealing with court cases and all of the stress, I struggled to process it all while trying to maintain some kind of normalcy in a budding relationship I was in at the time.
