Out Now – Melin Melyn make wonky pop-rock FFO Home Counties / Squid
Starting off with a psychedelic country twang that that draws comparisons to compatriots Gorkys Zygotic Mynci, the song quickly descends into a frantic audio barrage of explosive guitars, turbulent sax and wild vocals that wouldnt be amiss from a Squid or Home Counties track.
I’ve always been fascinated by the tales of the Rebecca Riots, says lead singer Gruff, whilst discussing the tracks lyrical meaning. It was when local Welsh farmers in the 1800s took to smashing up the toll gates put up by rich landowners, whilst being dressed in women’s clothes screaming the name Rebecca. That incredulity and rage still exists today, rising day by day due to the rich feeding off the poor…perhaps I should get my skirt….

By most accounts, this has been a pretty lousy year. Civil unrest, political uncertainty and a pandemic make for some depressing times. However, there have been a few random highlights sprinkled into the shit stew that is 2020. One of them is certainly the reemergence of Denver, Colorado punks Record Thieves (feat. members of Authority Zero, Allout Helter and Boldtype), who have been disturbingly quiet since 2017.

Cyborg-funk, Lee Paradise (ex-Hooded Fang, Phèdre) | Shares new single
The Fink was written and recorded between Berlin and Dan Lee’s – the real name behind Lee Paradise – home of Tkaronto/Toronto. There’s quite a process to his sound which includes drummer, Jonathan Pappo’s (Hooded Fang) nimble rhythms and dance/electronic producer, Michael Butler’s Yamaha CS-5. Musically, I think Lee’s doing something pretty cool here, attempting to channel the style and hard-hitting sound quality of hip-hop – Mobb Deep, Curren$y and Action Bronson are all key touchpoints to the new record – stacking layers of eerie vocal and ominous synths and fusing these with the renowned, monstrous bass lines of Lee Paradise and disco-funk elements, inspired by Walter Whisenhunt.

The performance-style music video was directed by Eduardo Ruiz and shot at Philadelphia’s abandoned Graffiti Pier, giving an added grimey undertone to the track. You can watch the video for “Unforgiving” here now.

K.D.T. describes “Hey Love” as “something that Sach was inspired by and asked if I could make a beat from it. As a producer, I try to help the artists I work with to follow their creative flow, and then the ping pong of collaboration takes over.
