SOLAMENTE Presents “1313 Refresh (LoL)”

There is something uniquely revealing about an artist returning to a song after ten years. It becomes a chance to measure the distance travelled since it was first written. That is exactly what Solamente does with “13:13(LOL),” a newly recorded version of the single of the same name originally released in 2016 as part of the project’s formative period.

Led by Washington, D.C.-based musician Raza Mahmood, Solamente has spent the intervening decade developing a strain of heavy music that balances aggression with melody. The new release of “13:13” showcases that journey, as it is much more than a remake. The improved phrasing, delivery and arrangement all point toward an older composition being rebuilt with a far more developed musical vocabulary.

The track’s greatest strength is its sense of weight. Heavy guitars provide the foundation, but there is a rhythmic quality to the arrangement. While the original tended to become a wall of distortion at times, this time around, the riffs have a groove-oriented character that cuts through the mix. The drums give the song a forceful forward movement, but rather than chasing sheer speed, Solamente allows the heavier passages room to breathe, making each shift in intensity hit considerably harder.

That contrast also benefits the vocals. Mahmood’s melodic instincts provide an important counterpoint to the density of the instrumentation, bringing an emotional dimension to music that could otherwise become overwhelmingly abrasive. Solamente has long occupied that territory between heaviness and vulnerability, and “13:13” demonstrates how effective the combination can be when neither side is allowed to dominate completely.

The new production similarly serves the material well. Everything feels larger and more substantial without sanding away the roughness that gives this kind of music its personality. Guitars retain their grit, the rhythm section carries genuine physical impact, and the overall mix has the depth necessary for the song’s darker atmosphere. It feels modern without becoming excessively pristine.

“13:13” is an interesting kind of anniversary release. Solamente does not simply preserve the past; the project confronts it with ten additional years of musicianship and perspective. The bones of an earlier song remain, but they now carry considerably more weight. For longtime listeners, it offers an opportunity to hear how far Solamente has travelled.
