Kyle Bagwell delivers a compact statement with his latest EP, “Love’s Gone Again.” Running for approximately 17 minutes, the EP is an economical collection of country songs that establish their characters, deliver their emotional blow and leave before the sentiment becomes overstated.
Raised in the Texas Panhandle and now based in Northern California, Bagwell places himself in a traditional country lineage encompassing Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard. Love’s Gone Again reflects those influences through its emphasis on direct melodies, narrative songwriting and hardship observed without excessive embellishment.
The title track establishes that emotional territory most effectively. Built around a warm acoustic arrangement, “Love’s Gone Again” deals with a relationship disappearing and the hopelessness left behind. Bagwell’s deep, smooth baritone perfectly captures the weary composure of someone who has experienced the same disappointment before.
“Outlaw’s Lament” expands the record beyond romantic loss with a more energetic arrangement and tells the story of a man being pursued by the consequences of earlier decisions. Kenny Corso’s expressive guitar work reinforces the song’s atmosphere of isolation as it draws upon one of country music’s oldest archetypes: the outlaw who discovers that freedom and loneliness are often inseparable.

The EP’s strongest change of pace comes with “The Devil Must Play.” It is faster and more animated than the title track, but the backing vocals give it the most old-timey sound on the EP. The story remains bleak, following a man struggling against his own destructive impulses, and that contrast between energetic arrangement and despairing lyrics gives the song an appealing tension.
Bagwell co-wrote the material with Corso, who contributed the original guitar parts, while Andrew Currier plays bass and Darius Minaee handles drums. Bagwell and Corso also co-produced the EP. The small ensemble gives the project an appropriately lean, song-centered identity: the arrangements support Bagwell’s voice and storytelling rather than competing with them.
What ultimately carries Love’s Gone Again is its lack of affectation. Bagwell does not attempt to manufacture exaggerated toughness, polish the sadness into pop melodrama or modernize country merely for novelty’s sake. It is a promising and emotionally coherent debut that is quietly persuasive in its treatment of heartbreak and regret.
