If you’re looking for over polished trap metal or over produced dubstep, go grab Mimi Barks single Jehricho or Excision’s latest release Air. Yet if you’re looking for lo-fi death metal, a merging of 90’s Florida Death Metal created with Nintendo laser stabs, all while being mastered on a 90’s Radio Shack [Tandy] computer, this is for you.
Antania wraps mid lo-fi sounds with slam death metal and live it’s something to behold. This unpolished and underproduced sound made me feel like I fell into a 90’s video game and I met the king and queen of the grid underworld. Meanwhile Antania is becoming highly relevant and I saw them open for the death metal band Vitriol in Hollywood CA in 2025. Antania live is quite an experience and nothing you see about them online prepares you for it. There is a reason they are hanging with the top bands in both Death Metal and Industrial. Antania is a type of brutality you’ve never heard before. Last year they toured with Suicide Commando and Marduk within a few weeks apart.
Antania really has no genre. They are called Aggrotech Death Metal, Doom Bass, Deathtronica or Black Bass Metal. I like to refer to Antania as Nintendo Death Metal. When I heard that Dr Luna purposely fries his masters to get a distorted sound, the lack of proper production became a brilliance with this unique blackened sound. All these 80’s and 90’s sounds with Kali Mortem spitting out venomous black metal vocals often mixed with distortion and phasers is a real [evil] treat and they are truly scary. Their songs are violent and they play a real nemesis role. There is nothing pretty here and Kali Mortem won’t be singing any pop vocals for you.
I had the fortune to hear their new demo The Unholy 33 and it’s nasty and mean and the unreleased track FrazzleDrip was terrifying. I like their direction as they are getting heavier and darker by the day, and there are no signs of this project selling out. Catch them live this year as they open for Infected Rain, The Electric Hellfire Club and they tour the east as a co-headliner for The Crown in October 2026. If you’re looking for pure originality while keeping you in a metal mood, Antania is for you.
