While many gaming products haven’t always hogged the headlines, the bands they’re based on certainly have. A somewhat niche genre of gaming, we’ve been treated to a wide range of band-related gaming titles over the years, some of which have gone down a treat with fans, while others haven’t done as well as expected.

Throughout the history of gaming, we’ve seen a number of world-famous bands make use of the video game medium. As we’ve mentioned, while some titles have been ridiculed, they’ve also been supplemented by some undoubted gems. Featuring the musicians people know and love alongside some of their greatest compositions playing in the background, video games based on bands aren’t new in the modern era. In fact, many titles from this category are from decades ago.

Aerosmith: Revolution X is an arcade classic 

It’s fair to say that Aerosmith: Revolution X is a title that divided opinion, although fans of the band seemed to enjoy it. A 1994 release, players could fire CDs in an attempt to save the group from a dystopian future government with a dislike for music. Yes, the game was as ridiculous as it sounds, but it was entertaining in its own way. For fans of Aerosmith’s music, Aerosmith: Revolution X is an arcade classic they’ll always remember.

The Beatles: Rock Band came out in 2009 

As arguably the greatest band of all time, The Beatles have a global following. The English legends also have an array of merchandise fans can snap up, plus a whole host of other intriguing offerings. They’ve even managed to impact the gaming category of entertainment, with The Beatles: Rock Band coming out in 2009 and being well received. A product by Harmonix Music Systems, it was available to play on prominent platforms like the PlayStation 3 and the Wii, with fans being able to play along to their favorite tracks in a fun and interactive product.

As one of hip-hop’s most treasured groups, it probably comes as no surprise to see Wu-Tang break into the gaming world. In Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style, the talented rappers are on show throughout, as fans enjoy a brutal fighting game with a number of recognizable and playable characters. With each member of the band possessing a range of killer moves, gamers could play along as their favorite lyricists and take down any rivals in their own way. This well-liked title also came with a special Wu-Tang “W” shaped controller bundle.

You’ll probably struggle to get your hands on a copy of Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker these days, but there is no denying just how pleasurable the release was when it came to the fore in 1990. While it feels a bit dated now, fans of the “King of Pop” enjoyed seeing off a wave of enemies with some of Jackson’s familiar dance moves. It isn’t the best game you’ll ever witness, but Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker entertained so many of his adoring fans.
