Danaë Xanthe Vlasse delivers a sweeping, epic expanse of sound with the gorgeous “Mythologies II.” The longevity and sheer density of the arrangements give the album this fittingly mystical presence. Vocals here serve as the heart and soul of the entire experience. Washing over the listener is a myriad of stories, narratives, and character studies deeply rooted in ancient history. How they let the arrangement highlight the message feels downright luscious. Every player plays off the other, resulting in this massive communal swell of sound, which is truly inspirational. There is no wonder why this collection is 2025 Grammy Nominated – Best Classical Compendium.
“Medusa & Perseus” set the tenor for what follows, offering a fantastic buildup of energy until it crescendos again and again. Stately piano work adorns the fluid motions of “Andromeda, I. Ocean Overture,” which resembles a churning sea to a tee. Rhythms slow down to a contemplative crawl with the reflective “Andromeda, II. Cassiopeia’s Lament.” Like a siren song comes the eerie “Andromeda, III. Andromeda’s Farewell,” whose haunting beauty feels goosebump-inducing. “Andromeda, IV. Cetus” comes from on high to descend into the abyss. With a softer approach, “Andromeda, V. Perseus’ Proposal” features a hushed awe. The strings have a soaring, dreamy-eyed gaze with “Andromeda, VI. Andromeda’s Vow & Lover’s Duet.” Swelling up like the sea is the intensity of the incredible finale, “Dreams of Ithaca,” which grows so loud it almost veers into pure dissonance in a completely all-consuming fashion.
“Mythologies II” shows the power of Danaë Xanthe Vlasse in presenting this massively immersive experience, with no way out, getting bombarded by music and mythology in unequal doses.
