‘A Confusion Sequence’ is Blake’s 11th solo album to date and being released on Trey Gunn’s (King Crimson) record label, 7D Media. The new album also features drummer Marco Minnemann (The Aristocrats, Steve Wilson, Joe Satriani) who has worked with Jason Blake in the past. One interesting piece of information here is that Jason recorded the entire record playing his Warr Artisan semi-hollow guitar. The Warr guitar is a twelve-string instrument incorporating the range of a guitar and bass. It is played by tapping the strings, a technique known as touch-style guitar. This style of playing certainly added an extra layer of richness to the mix on ‘A Confusion Sequence’
The album kicks off with a song that is both inquisitive and mysterious in nature on “Awakening to Questions”. With some darker elements being played on here and raw energy being tapped into, Jason Blake is playing with a purpose on “Awakening to Questions”. Jason is certainly grabbing the bull by the horns right out of the gates as we all experience “Awakening to Questions”. Next, get ready to shuffle this track into your playlist because “Memory Variations” has one infectious beat. With a wide array of sound hitting your ears, “Memory Variations” will not let you down and will certainly entertain you. On track three, “Pretending to Breathe”, the listener will inhale a vast amount of material and exhale a musical explosion. There is definitely a lot going on here musically, so be ready to wrap your ears around all of the interesting notes. “Pretending to Breathe” is sensible media that has a long-lasting effect on audiences worldwide. Jason follows up with a stellar performance on “Dormant Visions” where Blake is hitting on all the right notes & chords.
