Love songs may be one of the oldest musical themes in civilization but I bet that the break-up song is only younger by a week or so. The two, sadly, often go hand-in-hand. But if there is a need for the classic sonic kiss-off, it might as well be something done well. Party For One, the new one from Leanne Gallati, is the sound of just such a song being done well. Very well.
Blending some sultry soul licks and funky grooves, not only is Party For One a neat slice of nostalgia-infused, seductive pop, but it shows Gallati as a worthy successor to the much-missed Amy Winehouse. And that is no mean feat.
There is an echo of the ’60s pop sensation about the song, the sort of thing that Dusty Springfield might have delivered, but this is also very much a song for the here-and-now, a modern slice of forward-thinking sass but one built on very familiar and always effective pop traditions.
