The Exact Opposite, Release Post-Punk Debut Single ‘You Work For Us Now’

The Exact Opposite release their debut single ‘You Work For Us Now’ through Dental Records on 22nd March 2024. Between singer/guitarist Jamie Stuart and drummer/multi-instrumentalist Nigel Powell they have a long musical pedigree – together in underground indie heroes Dive Dive, and separately in Dustball, Unbelievable Truth and Frank Turner And The Sleeping Souls.

‘You Work For Us Now’ was amongst the very first batch of songs the duo wrote when they came back together in 2021, after life (and in Nigel’s case endless touring) finally allowed them time. “We were playing stuff at each other in a room like we always used to with Dive Dive” remembers Nigel, “wondering if we should get more people in the band and what we were going to sound like. Then ‘You Work For Us Now’ came along, and once I’d programmed the bass the excitement of Jamie’s spiky post-punk Television style guitar and an insistent dance bottom end immediately inspired us, and defined what The Exact Opposite was going to be”.

Recorded as part of upcoming debut album Skill Issue in Jonny Greenwood’s studio (Radiohead / The Smile), You Work For Us Now addresses some of the album’s core themes of not giving up, particularly in artistic endeavours. “If we were a jazz band, people would go ‘These guys have matured with age’ and people would be cool with that. I don’t know with this if we were proving something to ourselves, because regardless, I still would have done it anyway.” You Work For Us Now is a musical punch that truly showcases the deep and profound musically chemistry at the heart of this album and this band.
