New Single Out Now: EASY STAR PRESENTS: JONQUAN AND ASSOCIATES Drops New Song
Though JonQuan is relatively new to the reggae scene, you’d never know it by listening to the music on the upcoming EASY STAR PRESENTS: JONQUAN & ASSOCIATES. Working closely with two-time GRAMMY winner Victor Rice (Easy Star All-Stars, Bixiga 70, Ticklah), JonQuan has fashioned an album’s worth of brand-new tunes that evoke the power and soul of the golden age of reggae. These tracks are being released as singles (with dub versions mixed by Rice) over the course of the next few months, culminating in an album release in April 2022.

In the same vein as rising artists like nothing, nowhere., Yungblud, and Mod Sun, Tempoh Slow is a bouquet of flowers wrapped in a studded belt. Aggressively emotive, visceral and uncompromising. They revel in being musical shapeshifters averse to genres.

Chase says of the track that “There was no holding back writing these lyrics. The words might be laced in a groovy, danceable disco beat, but they’re still toxic. Jealousy is the ugliest emotion, but sometimes, feeling a bit jealous is what makes you realise you have feelings for someone. You don’t want to lose them, especially not to someone else.”

Fatherson are back, but not as you know them. Today, the Glaswegian three-piece have announced details of “Normal Fears”, their first album in three years. The album is a lush lesson in letting go. Gorgeous, groove-led singalongs steeped in electronics find the band in a playful mode, putting break-ups, old ways of working and everyday worries behind them to start afresh, sunny side up.
Longtime musical partners Buck McKinney (guitar) and Brad Bradburn (bass) first made their mark in the vaunted jazz/funk/acid rock act Gnappy––criss-crossing the nation in an 80’s Allegro RV, and lighting up stages coast-to-coast. Eight years into the project, encouraged by a late night heart-to-heart with Col. Bruce Hampton who urged the group to try some straight-ahead funk, McKinney and Bradburn decided to embark on a rare-groove/funk side-project. Thus, Flyjack was born.

Linking with producers SIROJ & Blazehoven, Joya Mooi continues her run of modern R&B releases with “Most Frail” and explores how the legacy of freedom fighters can so often become forgotten. Recalling moments of bravery and sacrifice, Joya ponders on the lost stories of those revolutionaries and pays homage to her fathers work as a political activist, who was exiled from South Africa due to the Apartheid regime. The track’s mellow soundscape emphasises its sentimental reference point, while Joya’s heavenly vocals provide a resounding sense of calm and reflection.

Fresh off the heels of her powerhouse performance at this year’s acclaimed Head In The Clouds festival, Jakarta-born, LA-based singer-songwriter and producer NIKI is thrilled to release a new sonically rich single and music video called “Spilt” via 88rising. A retro slowburn, complete with steel guitar and NIKI’s sweet rasp, “Split” sees the 22 year-old artistic force chronicling the ache of feeling split between two worlds and two homes. Written by NIKI herself and produced with frequent collaborators Jacob Ray and Bekon & The Donuts, “Split” depicts the emotional pull and turmoil the pressure to continually adapt brings. Like all her well-loved songs – NIKI has over one billion Spotify streams to date – “Split” leaves a mark.
