Watch + Listen: Unique forward-thinking artist and producer Sola returns with the gorgeous ‘Feels Like a War’

A truly unique artist whose music is enriched with powerful reference points, Sola’s new single ‘Feels Like A War’ takes cues from the doo-wop sound of the late 1940’s and 1950’s. A lush, textured production formed by a resample of Sola’s own vocals creates an elegant backdrop for the track’s nostalgic feel, yet her modern touch of ‘warped soul’ still firmly remains. Elevated further by trumpet work from Ife Ogunjobi (member of Jazz band Ezra Collective) ‘Feels Like A War’ is a gorgeous blend of Sola’s influences that meander between timeless R&B and jazz styles – inspired by the likes of Sade and Nina Simone – and experimental, electronic soundscapes. Its supporting video, directed by Destine Paige, captures this melting pot perfectly as SOLA elegantly performs in a range of classic, and then futuristic, settings.

Vic Mensa Shares New Single “The Taste”

The new song comes on the heels of Mensa’s acclaimed seven song I TAPE project, which showcased Mensa’s adept lyricism, detailing American dysfunction with a poignancy and articulation that few could match. The project was anchored by “Shelter,” a powerful collaboration with Chance The Rapper and Wyclef Jean that unpacks the tangled web of poverty and criminal justice. Vic, Wyclef, and Peter Cottontale turned in a stunning performance of the single on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert featuring imagery and symbolism that honed in on the song’s urgent call for change.

Deerhoof Share Ritchie Valens-Inspired Single “Scarcity is Manufactured” From ‘Actually, You Can’ LP Out 10/22 (Joyful Noise Recordings)

Deerhoof today released the jubilant “Scarcity is Manufactured,” the latest single off their upcoming LP Actually, You Can, due out October 22nd via Joyful Noise Recordings. Accompanied by an animated collage-style music video by Gabriella Molina, the new single originally blossomed from Deerhoof guitarist Ed Rodriguez’ vibrant guitar demos: “The anthem’s spirit comes from Ritchie Valens’ rendition of the traditional song ‘La Bamba.’ I was moved by his declaration of Mexican pride and that he did it in his own style. He was able to be his past, present and future, everything at once. I’ve struggled with my identity, being raised by parents who embodied their culture yet pushed me to be more American, hoping to shield me from the racism they endured. I never felt like a ‘real’ Mexican but I also wasn’t seen as a ‘real’ American by many. At our shows, people began to tell me it meant a lot to them that there was someone of Mexican descent playing in Deerhoof. Community gives us the strength to accept and celebrate ourselves in a way that we may not be able to on our own.”

TOM MORELLO RELEASES NEW SINGLE FROM FORTHCOMING ALBUM

“Bring Me The Horizon is really the current standard bearer of hard rock/metal today, and thank God for them for that. I had a couple of huge riffs and we just started mashing it up with Zakk Cervini, who has worked with them before. This song was written on three continents — Oli was in Brazil, Jordan was in England and then I was here in L.A. It was a real United Nations of metal coming together to produce this song, which really feels to me like it captures the angst and the frustration of the pandemic boiling over into an all-time mosh pit. This song also has one of my favorite guitar solos that I’ve played in quite a while, as I was really digging deep to make a solo as devastating as the track,” said Morello.

Bria shares an official new video for their cover of The Walker Brothers’ “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore”

On the heels of Bria’s previously released covers of Karen Dalton’s “Green Rocky Road” and Waylon Jennings hit, “Dreaming My Dreams With You,” comes a new video for their interpretation of The Walker Brothers’ song “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore.” Directed by Andrew Matthews, the video was shot at a friend’s farmland in the country. “We were all struck by the dilapidated beauty of the property and decided to create a series of tableaus, hoping to capture the spirit of the place and our time there,” shares Matthew’s. “The decaying, sun-baked farm seemed a good companion to the song.”

Ada Lea shares new single ‘can’t stop me from dying’ with video | New album ‘one hand on the steering wheel the other sewing a garden’ out via Saddle Creek this Friday

Today, she presents a new single/video, ‘can’t stop me from dying’. Throughout the track, there are subtle sonic flourishes that make it especially compelling. Although other songs feel timeless with a 70s studio sheen, ‘can’t stop me from dying’ sounds completely modern in its use of electronics, sound effects, and pitched vocals. Its video, directed by Katerine DM, reflects this modern feel, mimicking a Sims character wandering through a town before having a wild, dancing-filled night.

On “A Lot to Ask,” Vick wrestles with the conundrum of having to live in the world among others in all your peculiarities and self-destructive flaws. Ovlov Return w/ “Land of Steve-O”

Formed in 2009, Ovlov are the kind of cult phenomenon that seems to never stop growing despite the stop-start pattern of the band’s existence. Led by songwriter and guitarist Steve Harlett, the Connecticut four-piece has released two LPs and a handful of EPs over the last decade and have broken up more times than they have made albums in that span, and yet their reputation (and with it their audience) has steadily expanded, largely as a result of a kind of grassroots, word-of-mouth excitement that feels of a piece with the band’s DIY origins. Fixtures at now legendary Brooklyn venues like Shea Stadium, the band’s two LPs (2013’s AM and 2018’s Tru which both saw release on the Brooklyn label Exploding In Sound) have seen them praised for picking up the torch of ’90s indie rock groups like Dinosaur Jr. and Sebadoh, making what NPR described as “big, fuzzy rock n roll that you can drown in,” while carving out a unique sound that has had a surprisingly persistent influence on the indie rock bands that came after them.

Mass Worship Release Title Track And Video For “Portal Tombs”

Portal Tombs is a terrifying but electrifying exploration of the gloomy depths of human nature: a monolithic manifestation of the musical force that is MASS WORSHIP. Drawing inspiration from bands such as At The Gates, Mastodon and Meshuggah, MASS WORSHIP could be likened to many bands, but somehow forge their musical identity into something exceptionally distinctive and transcendent, and with enough confidence and conviction to win over even the most orthodox fans of the genre. It was obvious from the first riff on the first song from their very first album: MASS WORSHIP were born fully-fledged, utterly unique and magnificently destructive. Stay tuned for more details about pre-orders for Portal Tombs.

VHS Collection announce new album, Night Drive, due out Feb 2022 || New single “The Deep End” Out Today via Tiger Tone / PIAS

On the song, the band shares:
“The Deep End was written on one of our last trips to LA before travel stopped. It was written pretty organically, one part flowing into the next. We really fell in love with the pre-chorus drop as soon as we came up with it and wanted to build around it. The verse is shouty and sparse, describing someone who’s angry/confused with their way in the world, searching for meaning or something better. The pre is a groove, hopeful yet with a twinge of darkness. It moves you along. The post-chorus/outro we went full sail on, maybe too much – celebratory and complete in the range of emotions. We didn’t hold back. It’s a track about finding where you fit, and searching for comfort and companionship in trickier times.”
