Blue Ridge Mountains-based singer-songwriter Dori Freeman has announced her return with a dazzling new LP, Ten Thousand Roses. The “grunge-country” opus, produced by her husband Nicholas Falk, is set to be released via her own boutique label, Blue Hens Music, on September 10. With her fourth studio album, Freeman has created a Southern masterpiece—a ten-song collection that engages with the tenants of Americana, but infuses them with inventive lyrical ideas and bold melodic experiments. Throughout the album, she challenges traditional Appalachian stereotypes, instead thoughtfully engaging with the prevalence of such ideas and how they can fit into a multifaceted modernity. Ten Thousand Roses is modern roots music in the truest sense of the genre.
The track follows the release of his recent collaboration with Diane Warren & Carlos Santana on the track “She’s Fire,” which is featured on Warren’s upcoming debut album, The Cave Sessions Vol. 1. G can next be seen on the music festival circuit, including performances at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, TN as well as the Breakaway Music Festival in Concord, NC.
Sycco’s psych-infused pop dream out now via Future Classic
Powered by shimmering, hooky choruses and impressive psych-pop production – the now-signature Sycco style – the EP’s textures sound like what a lava lamp looks like: glowing, fluid, sometimes joyfully surprising in the direction it moves. Throughout the seven tracks, love is a constant but it’s not all heart-eyes and hopeful prospects. “A lot of the EP is about my angry feelings that I bottle up. I write about what I’m going through in my day to day and about love … and being scared of love.” This contrast between exultation and melancholia throughout the EP might just capture the core of Sycco: glimmering choruses that will refuse to leave your frontal lobe, and the secret, scared confessions scrawled between beats.
