Louie Short (ffo Alex G, Cass McCombs) | Shares new single / Announces album
He’s also annouuncing his new record, OMW 4ev which is out for release later this year, exact date TBC. Quite an interesting story behind this first single – it was written by his dad, Michael Short and an artist called BJ Cook in the late 70s in Toronto. It was recorded with the intention of selling it through BJ’s ex-husband, David Foster (who worked with countless big-name artists inc. Dolly Parton, George Harrison, Ringo Starr), however, it was lost and only rediscovered 40 years later when it was digitized by an engineer and sent out. Louie got hold of it and re-recorded it. There’s a lovely slacker-rock sound to it, it’s a real doozie and I’m super excited by it.

PIZZAGIRL shares ‘by the way’ | final single from new album
In contrast to previous singles ‘car freshener aftershave’, ‘bullet train’ and ‘sugar ray’ – a string of surreal electronic indie-pop-bops -‘by the way’ showcases the other side of the record. More low-key, it represents the tracks built around acoustic and unadorned guitar and piano. This is reflective of the amount of himself Liam Brown has put into the album. Whereas on past releases he’s jumped between different characters and costumes, hiding behind fictional stories to relate semi-autobiographical sentiment – on ‘softcore mourn’ the filter lifts. As Liam himself explains in his own idiosyncratic way:

Out Now: Liz Lawrence shares new single ‘Babies’ // new album ‘The Avalanche’ due Sep 17th 2021
Compared to her previous record ‘Pity Party’, which saw Lawrence look inward for inspiration, the wild, vibrant ‘Babies’ is on the less autobiographical side. The third track to be released from her upcoming album, it was initially inspired by “videos of babies laughing on the internet, which is a panacea for all ills”, the song sees Lawrence inhabiting a character desperately trying to drag themselves out of drudgery. “I thought of a man who’s driving to work every morning and saying goodbye to his wife, kissing her on the cheek and then going to sit in his car, even though he lost his job months ago.” It’s a joyful ride that parodies self-help tutorials and sees Lawrence flexing her voice in brand new ways. “I’ve been singing pretty for a long time, and I wanted to try new things. So I’ve machoed it up. Babies is one of my favourite tracks on the record. I felt like I was exorcising some demons with it, just for fun.”
