Food for the soul: ‘Nothing2’ by Strange Souvenirs

This track really has something spectacular about it. It’s rare to hear such a fusion of sounds and genres working so well together. Strange Souvenirs are more inventors than musicians, with their totally fresh approach to music-making. Together with producer and creative collaborator Cameron James Laing turned a downtrodden demo into something melancholy and majestic. The theme of the single is a little bleak but it isn’t depressingly so at all. ‘This is what it all amounts to / When the night’s through / Absolutely nothing’ warn the lyrics, yet there’s also something so full and meaningful about that sense of ‘nothing’. The track isn’t nihilistic though. Musically, it builds rather than destroys; packed full of instruments played by a multitude of talented musicians. Melodies interweave, layers of sound ebb and flow. Within the theme also – the night shines forth as being ripe and opportunistic; loaded with meaning. There is time for reflection and for stillness – and that’s far from just nothing. The very structure of the song, which is quite circular, also invites the listener to take a moment. Nothing actually turns out to be something, maybe – even – everything.
