The Acute are an exciting two piece rock group shaking up the underground and breathing new life into New York rock music. Viveca Butler, the drummer, singer and songwriter previously created the critically acclaimed heavy metal band Occultation which toured the US, Canada, and Europe. She also played in a number of other critically acclaimed bands, including Dayglow, and has played shows with MGMT and Chairlift as well as with Blondie in 2009 and many other revered bands.

Victoria wrote “Disaffected Scrolling Thru” after discussion with a friend about getting trapped on the treadmill of “never enough money, never enough validation despite the hollow nature of the pursuit. So many of us don’t love the social media game, but we all live within the social constraints of our generation and this culture of scarcity. More personally, the song’s about managing the tensions of pursuing self-expansion while staying true to oneself.”

Manchester-based dance project, The Spirit 808, release their new single ‘On The Beach’, an uplifting, positive track after the year we have all lived through. Rob Forster, the singer songwriter behind the project, explains ‘The world needs some optimism and we all need to be ‘on the beach’ at least in spirit; hope exists and better times are on the way.’ During the pandemic Rob worked for the NHS and witnessed incredible acts of sacrifice and kindness, saw the best of people, the good humour and undeniable belief in good times to come, where we can once again meet, hug, love, laugh and dance. The track encapsulates the almost undefinable excitement of going on holiday and the sense of possibility; recording virtually during lockdown made the experience even more poignant. Rob explains: ‘On The Beach’ was an escape for the mind as much as a postcard from the future’.

Of the track, which is a tribute to Vaughan Oliver, 4AD’s legendary in-house art director who died in late 2019, Piroshka vocalist Miki Berenyi says: “I wrote this originally as an instrumental but the rest of the band convinced me to put a vocal on it. The lyrics are snapshot snippets of Vaughan Oliver’s funeral in January 2020 – lines from the speeches, fleeting impressions of the day. I’m getting to the age where the people I grew up with are dying and I find funerals a comfort in the sadness, formal but emotional, a celebration of a life, a space for the living to reconnect.” The video, directed by Connor Kinsey / Home Picture Films, can be viewed HERE.
