Labor, community groups come together to help Boston families with child care necessities
Boston Mayor Janey to attend Diaper Drive to benefit Brookview House, which supports low-income mothers and their children
Many families are struggling to pay for the rising cost of diapers for their children as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. To provide this vital resource to those in need, a coalition of labor and community groups on Wednesday will host a citywide Diaper Drive.
Diapers are a necessity, not a luxury item. They keep babies and toddlers clean, dry, and healthy. Diapers are expensive and they are used up fast; a baby goes through roughly 2,000 – 3,000 diapers in a year. One-in-three U.S. families suffer from a diaper need, according to the National Diaper Bank Network. Diapers are just one of the many increased costs families with young children are dealing with today. COVID-19 has also exposed the inequalities in our state’s child care system, putting tremendous strain on families. With the upcoming American Rescue Plan funding, we’re urging MA legislators to support low-income communities and communities of color by funding flexible child care and providing much-needed financial support to families in need.
