Endearments Shares Debut Single “Left Side” Via Punk Rock Theory, New Music Out Soon

Endearments’ debut single, “Left Side”, is a mirror for the inner world of Brooklyn-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kevin Marksson. Initially written to convey the dysphoria of obsessive-compulsive disorder, “it quickly became a song about the way my OCD was affecting my relationship, and making it difficult for me to see the toxic expectations that were hurting me,” says Marksson.

The resulting track unspools unanswerable questions over mighty pulses from drummer Jonathan Schmidt and Marksson’s own multi-tracked vocals, which flicker, omnipresent and cool, around the edges of the song’s atmosphere. “Left Side” ponders the limits of love and empathy, its hook—”you should know me like I do”—asking for the impossible as glimmering arps cycle between twin poles of solipsism and codependence.

Hear Six Organs of Admittance’s “All That They Left You” off his upcoming album, The Veiled Sea, that’s out June 25th on Three Lobed Recordings

Chasny’s gift is in making even the mutant rock of his new record The Veiled Sea as enveloping and mysterious as the unsettling chance operations of his Hexadic period. The Veiled Sea is, in some sense, a record built around guitar solos. Not the blown-out deconstructions of his work with Comets on Fire nor the saturnine processions of The Sun Awakens; not even the haunted, lysergic summonings of his early masterpieces like Dark Noontide and Compathia. The ones here are big, open, implacably ascendant edifices crowning the album like church spires over the towns of Europe. They reminded me of the enormous, chiming solos of Katzenmusik-era Michael Rother, but Chasny insisted on a decidedly less rarefied touchstone: 80s American pop shredder Steve Stevens. He of Billy Idol’s band; he of “Dirty Diana”; yes, he of the soaring Top Gun anthem. Chasny continues to draw the improbable lines of connection.

Listen to Jonny Kosmo’s “Last Call” via Week in Pop; sophomore LP is out on 6/4

“This tune was composed mostly of samples from other songs I had recorded which was a new process I was trying on with this record. I like the idea of themes and pieces folding in on themselves. In this process I have found there to be lots of happy accidents. Ideas I wouldn’t have thought of appear with the slip of my finger. It is very fun that way! The trumpet parts and parlor piano were all chopped using a sampler and then blasted into the groove. I had been fooling with the idea of chances and their meaning ever since I saw Jim Carey do his commencement address at the 2014 MUM GRADUATION. This Youtube video heavily influenced the lyrics of this song.”
