GOJIRA SHARE NEW SINGLE “THE CHANT”

The center piece of an album-long call to action, “The Chant” is a slow-burning track featuring some of Gojira’s most melodic material to date. Where past anthems were driven by nuanced dynamics and technical guitar arrangements, “The Chant” is a self-described “healing ritual” emanating primordial warmth, culminating in a harmony-stacked chorus that bridges the gap between ancient hymnals and contemporary rock.

Listen to Cheekface’s new single: “We Need a Bigger Dumpster”

Cheekface is an indie rock trio from Los Angeles consisting of guitarist/singing person Greg Katz, bassist/other singing person Amanda Tannen and drummer Mark “Echo” Edwards. It’s a band obviously influenced by the great American talk-singers like Lou Reed, Jonathan Richman and Stephen Malkmus, British post-punk bands like Wire and The Fall, and proto-indie bands like The dB’s and Minutemen. But Cheekface chart their own course with their self-effacing, openhearted lyrics that set the mundanity of daily life against the backdrop of our chaotic world, as in the memorable “Best Life,” when Katz blurts out, “Due to personal reasons, I said nothing in therapy / we just laughed and laughed and laughed and laughed and laughed!”

LYRICS BORN and CUTSO tackle Anti-Asian Hate with new single/video

In a New York Daily News article from April 18th, actress/comedian Margaret Cho reported 3,795 anti-Asian violent physical assaults and that “The latest anti-Asian numbers, as of April 11, 2021, saw 54 anti-Asian hate crimes reported to the NYDP, compared to 12 by that date in 2020 — an increase of 350%.” While animosity towards Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) has been an unfortunate part of the fabric of racism in the US, this thread of prejudice and hate has only gotten thicker in the recent years. With May being AAPI Heritage Month, attention to this rash wave of oftentimes violent racism is being highlighted by Bay Area AAPI artists LYRICS BORN and CUTSO.

IMPURE WILHELMINA Releases New Single, “Midlife Hollow”

The band comments: “‘Midlife Hollow’ has always been one of our favourite tracks from ‘Antidpte.’ Musically speaking, it is rather atypical in its construction while remaining perfectly coherent with the band’s universe. In an atmosphere both tense and melancholic, the song speaks of the loss of illusions, the extinction of the inner fire, the rise of bitterness, the settling into solitude and the awareness of the brevity of existence. We are confronted with an unalterable destiny that holds us in its iron hand, as evoked by the telluric finale of the track.”

Smaller, the debut single from my first record Idle Hands

My debut single, “Smaller,” is an attempt to capture that feeling – a meditation on the compulsion to curl up into a ball and occupy as little space as possible.

This song was written and recorded sitting in the same spot in my teeny apartment. It marks my first stab at creating in collaborative isolation, with players sending their ideas from across Ontario.

NUCLEAR WINTER RELEASE MOTLEY CRUE COVER

Zimbabwean one-man metal band NUCLEAR WINTER has released a cover of Motley Crue’s Wild Side via Sleeping Village Reviews. The project is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Gary Sautmeister.

Gary commented “Wild Side was always one of my favourite Motley Crue songs and after finishing the recording of my Greystone album I thought it would be fun to give that song a try. Also it was interesting on the vocals because I realised it required more attitude to get it across than how I was generally doing clean vocals. I certainly can’t compete with Vince Neil, but doing it was a good learning exercise. I also experimented with adding more synths and making the track more industrial but it just felt better not to add unnecessary stuff to it.”
