Kishi Bashi Announces New EP ‘Emigrant’ Out 4/2/21 (Joyful Noise), Shares New Single “Wait For Springtime”
Kishi Bashi today announced his new EP Emigrant, a companion release to his critically acclaimed 2019 album Omoiyari, will be released on April 2nd, 2021, via Joyful Noise Recordings. The EP’s wistful, seasonably-named first single “Wait For Springtime” is out now. “This is a song about the anticipation and hope of the equinox that is to come after the pandemic,” explains Kaoru Ishibashi, who records as Kishi Bashi. “Even though the longing to hug and cry in each other’s arms may be a faint memory right now, in our core we know that we will bounce back in a lush way in our proverbial springtime.” The timely, new six-song collection contains four original compositions and two covers—of Regina Spektor’s “Laughing With” and Dolly Parton’s “Early Morning Breeze,” both released earlier this year. Arranged and recorded over the last year, the Emigrant EP serves as a time capsule of 2020 as it meditates on the anxieties of the COVID-19 pandemic, the comforts of nature, the pains of resource-fueled conflicts, and the resiliency that emerges from struggle.

We announced last month with “Fantasy” which found support at The Needle Drop and Indie88 amongst others, the full record comes produced by Renny Wilson (Michael Rault, Faith Healer) with mastering provided by Harris Newman (Orville Peck, Wolf Parade, Patrick Watson). As a full piece, the record takes a little from each of the decades with glimmers of butter-smooth 70s disco, 80s British new wave such as Prefab Sprout and Scritti Pollitti, and classic soul takes from the likes of Marvin Gaye. This new track however is a really slick dive into P Funk, Funkadelic and Sly Stone, stacking vocals and layering this gooey synth and alongside tar-thick basslines.
claire rousay Shares New Video + Single “Peak Chroma”
“The Peak Chroma music video was made using collected footage in and around my studio, where Claire and I spent a lot of our time working on “a softer focus”. From some of the audio in the album, to press photos and whistles, to almost the entire music video, my studio became a very central space for this project (even one of the tracks is named after it). The music video captures a balance of stillness and movement with sections of repetitive and meditative motion mimicking a flow state of creation we both experience in our practice. The cohesion of the music video with the album art and audio was very important hence the correlations of the portal-like entries to a dream state which is the feeling we wanted to create in this entire project. This video feels like you’re in a familiar dream, one of warmth and comfort through overlapping and superimposed images of Claire and I working or doing mundane tasks. The Peak Chroma video shares intimate moments of our experience working together, and documents the essence of “a softer focus.'” – Dani Toral
LAPÊCHE (Brooklyn) share driving new single, “Bells”!
“Bells is about being sober and not forgetting how bad it was when you weren’t. It scrapes the surface of the freedom and joy that comes with not being controlled by addiction. Part of that freedom develops as we learn to show up, for ourselves and others, in ways that we can’t when we are in active addiction. The freedom includes being present and accepting of what is. This doesn’t mean resignation, it means acknowledging uncomfortable truths, feelings, and circumstances, and turning them into loving choices moving forward.”
Blood Cultures unveil new single
‘Set It On Fire’ serves as the latest exploration into LUNO’s overarching themes of change while slowly piecing together a new Blood Cultures universe set into motion by previous releases including ‘Beneath The Moon & Me’ and ‘Keeps Bringing Me Back’. ‘Set It On Fire’ utilizes softly strumming guitars and shimmering synthesizers to develop a sense of peace that contrasts from the emotional complexity of its underlying message. The track is a critical look at nihilism and the choice of ignorance in the age of information, insinuating that people often forget or choose to ignore their own power therefore hindering possibility for change.
