Following up on his critically acclaimed second solo album, In Other Words, multi-instrumentalist and Alaskan, Paul Jacks, explores solitude and his identity in an ever-changing world. The backdrop for his new album, Black Jackal, is an apocalyptic world and its aftermath. Drawing from Egyptian mythology, Jacks takes on a futuristic persona with Black Jackal to explore the transition to the afterlife. According to the writer, the album represents our “journey into the dark to discover the light which has the power to transform us.” The album is full of syncopated synths, electronic pianos, orchestra and brass sections, lush pads, echoey backing tracks, dark harmonies, and a hybrid of live and electronic drums played by both Jacks and Dan Konopka (OK Go). Jacks brings his listeners into a futuristic existential crisis and takes them on a musical journey that touches all of the senses.
FARER create an imposing discord of severe, caustic bass textures, harrowing vocals and winding drums. The band, featuring members of Ortega, was originally founded as MENHIR in 2013, but chose FARER as their new moniker mid 2019, after spending two and a half years of writing and recording their debut record “Monad”. By taking time to further explore the possibilities of being a band with two bass players and the absence of a guitar, the record exhibits the bands evolution into a new entity thoroughly. Meaning, carefully crafted, drawn-out, oppressive and compelling songs.

This music was made by a listener. I created them differently because I want you to know that I see you. I hear you. With imagery of fresh spirits carelessly walking through battlefields, mid-fight, as tracer rounds whistle by overhead, the sentiment is that there is peace once on the other side.

Robert Duncan was barely out of his teens when he gave up singing in bands and started writing for the influential, icon-smashing Creem — “America’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll Magazine” — becoming its managing editor at the ripe old age of 22. He went on to contribute to Rolling Stone, Circus, Life, and dozens of other publications. In the process, Duncan became a rock Zelig, sharing tall tales and .45-caliber bullets with a young, scrawny Bruce Springsteen; introducing the Clash’s Mick Jones and Joe Strummer to a broken-down piano player of dubious ability, leading to a hilariously disastrous recording session; working alongside his friend Lester Bangs and discovering the legendary critic dead, at 33, in the apartment next door. ICYMI- “Better Man” Is Streaming Everywhere!
Here’s what Redray had to say about the track:
“Better Man was written enroute to the studio while I was feeling the weight of missing my lady. She was outta town for work, and I was flying out from Portland to NJ to record, departing just hours before she would return home. Neither of us had done anything wrong but it was, simply, another near miss. The emotions of that missed opportunity inspired the song, making a declaration to do better. This in itself is rather strange because I rarely write about conventional relationships and love, but why not own your shit to a dope track?”

Spirituality and ancient myths color a spacious sound that nonetheless worships at the altar of modern and unwaveringly hard-hitting heavy rock.

Melanie says, “’Waiting for Fall’ dives headfirst into an icy sea to explore the twilight world that exists between dream state and waking. A fluid, shape-shifting space where conversations, random moments and thoughts can sneak into our subconscious, often revealing new meaning and unexpected significance.”
Breaking down the line a little more, when I found music and songwriting it was a breathless feeling; I was completely immersed in the idea of writing stories and sharing them through song, it was as though I found a new God.
This lifestyle I began to pursue was not conducive to the relationship I was in at the time, which unhinged a string of problems. The lyrics are contradicting throughout the whole piece. “What You Don’t Know” is that I’ll do anything to stay in this relationship, although I recognize it’s bad for me.
