Australian-Japanese electronic sibling duo Lastlings are on a hot streak with club-ready remixes this summer, today unleashing another rework of their latest single “No Time”, from rising British producer Will Easton. Describing his process, Göransson says, “The score is full of inverted sounds and illusions. I spent a great deal of time taking familiar sounds and manipulating them — both organically and digitally — so that they reflected the complex world of ‘Tenet.’ I wanted to find themes with melodies, textures and rhythms that were reminiscent of the past yet fitting for the future; sounds that stood out on their own but also truly worked in inverted ways, to reflect the surrealism and unease of the scenes where the laws of physics change to allow sets and characters to move and speak in that strange, unsettling inverted way. One of the biggest challenges for me in writing this score was figuring out how to provide a musical roadmap for audiences as they experience something so conceptually ambitious and technically complex.”

Journaling her entire life, Lee sees music as an extension of a larger project. The World of Fever Queen is a document of her life traveling and working across America. Mid-century melodies draw upon Lee’s childhood singing in choirs in the Midwest. Sparse instrumentation evokes cold nights of getting weird in Chicago’s DIY scene. The album’s surfy wash taps into the bleached energy Lee found in her days farming in Hawaii and cutting hair in California. Torch songs, like “Love Last,” are set in America’s burnt-out husk, along dark highways and desolate lake shores. Layered vocals and two cover interludes—Brenda Lee’s “I’m Sorry” and Lee Hazlewood’s “For One Moment”—ratchet up the atmosphere even further.

Maestro Nicky Romero debuts his alter ego with the new “Monocule Volume 1” EP, which is out on his imprint Protocol Recordings. Throughout his illustrious career, Nicky has become synonymous with cutting edge progressive music and has since experimented with dance-pop crossover styles and more. Monocule is a brand new moniker that is dedicated to his passion for deeper, underground vibes. The EP’s first track “Time to Save,” produced together with Nicky’s Dutch fellow Tim van Werd and Protocol’s veteran Mosimann, has a decidedly darker vibe than the usual Protocol tracks, with growling basslines and emotive vocals by the Frenchman himself. “Close To Me” delivers cinematic melodies overtop a deep bassline and breathy lyrical overlays.
