Eli Winter Releases the Joyous “Maroon” From Upcoming Album Unbecoming

About the track, Eli writes:

“When I first drafted this song four years ago I thought of it as a solo piece, but as I cycled through contrived middle sections to find one that felt my own, I realized it needed a group. Enter Tyler, Cameron and Sam, who have developed singular approaches to their instruments largely through different contexts of improvising: Tyler through freely improvised music, Cameron through deep study of bluegrass, oldtime and adjacent traditions, and Sam through experimental theatre. By chance, when we recorded the song, Sam, Tyler and I had never played it as a group, and Cameron had agreed to record from Houston after the fact, each working on scant instruction amounting to “do what feels right.” The result, I think, is a song fluid and tightly structured, one where each note is in service to the one before it, one whose distinct instrumental layers merge into an evocative whole.”

Now that I’ve been in a new city for a couple years, I’ve found that many of the things I was trying to run away from are actually things I like most about myself, my hometown, and my support network. It continues to surprise me, which is how I got the line, “There are rooms in this house that I’m still finding.”’

Logan Farmer Shares New Single/Video “Sorrowbirds,”

“The lyrics of ‘Sorrowbirds’ were written to address my personal bouts with depression and addiction in a straightforward, almost poppy way. The instrumentation was partially inspired by the Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy record Arise, Therefore, which heavily uses drum machine alongside skeletal guitar work. I love to play with dichotomous elements like that: cold, digital drums with emotional storytelling,” explains Farmer. “The visuals were taken from F.W. Murnau’s visionary silent film Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, which is full of these really stylized and innovative tracking shots. I took a bunch of these and edited them to tell a slightly different story, one about a couple that takes a vacation to the city to rejuvenate their fading relationship, only to perish in a storm during the return voyage.”
