It’s ‘Bout to Be a Purple Summer: 03 Greedo Shares Track with Chief Keef

One of the rap game’s most restlessly creative minds, 03 Greedo spent the months leading to his prison sentence recording countless songs with a long list of quality collaborators. Ready to reveal the latest fruits of his labor, Greedo shares “Bands In Da Basement,” his first new single of 2020. A simmering, percolating slice of West Coast rap, “Bands In Da Basement” finds the Alamo Records signee mixing easy melodies and biting flows, teetering at the edges of his vocal range as he recalls his trapping past: “Bands in the basement, money in the mattress/Work in the walls, I got millions in my mansion.” Produced by Ron-Ron, a frequent Greedo collaborator, new song boasts a guest verse from Chief Keef, another experimenter who blurs the lines between singing and rapping, who delivers an auto-tuned, ad-lib-laden 16.

CAMÍNA shares political, Latin trip-hop first single “Cinnamon” with video made by BLM video creator

Dallas-based artist, CAMÍNA, shares her first single, “Cinnamon,” today and announces her debut album, Te Quiero Mucho, due out October 2, 2020. “Cinnamon” is a marimba-infused trip-hop beat that introduces the album’s Latin musical influences. A particularly prescient song given recent events, “Cinnamon” was initially inspired by the ongoing treatment of asylum seekers at the US-Mexico border. Sung through a distorted megaphone, CAMINA’s haunting vocals blend together lyrical elements of African-American spirituals (“Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen”), the rallying cry of grassroots activism (“Si se puede” or “Yes we can”), and feelings of helplessness for the future (“We will rise above, but the damage is done”).

OUT TODAY: David Ramirez – ‘My Love Is A Hurricane’ via Thirty Tigers

For the introspective 10-song set, he teamed up with Dallas producer Jason Burt (Leon Bridges, Sarah Jaffe, Paul Cauthen) to layer his widely acclaimed vocals atop “misty psychedelic undertones and potent gospel arrangements” (NPR Music). Already receiving high praise, No Depression calls My Love Is A Hurricane “a next-level album,” adding, “It’s a warm, groove-driven record in the tradition of Nick Cave or Leonard Cohen — or at least the Cohen who sang “there is a crack in everything / that’s how the light gets in.”

“Soledad” by Madeline Louie (prod. Jnatra)

“Soledad” is a surreal song encapsulating the feeling of the sun in San Diego, which is where Madeline Louie spent her college days. Nostalgia and memories have become a driving inspiration in her writing, especially in times of social distancing. Jnatra, her creative collaborator and friend, initiated the idea for “Soledad” after sharing a beat— a synthy, dance-pop track with driving kicks and sparkling reverb. Madeline Louie and Jnatra are the type of creatives that need to feel busy to stay sane, so, over the past couple of weeks indoors (in addition to their full-time jobs!) they’ve been working on an EP together to be released next Fall.

Matt Berninger of the National debuts “Distant Axis”

Berninger explains about the track, which he wrote with The Walkmen’s Walter Martin, “I met Walter Martin fifteen years ago when The National opened for The Walkmen on a tour of shitty clubs in the American Southeast. On that tour I learned a lot about how to be in a band without ruining your life. I also learned a lot about Florida, Tennessee and Georgia. Walt and I have stayed friends and about three years ago we started passing ideas back and forth. ‘Distant Axis’ started from a sketch Walt sent me named ‘Savannah.’ I think it’s about falling out of touch with someone or something you once thought would be there forever.”

Galimatias returns with “Redeye” from debut full-length album

Galimatias infuses ‘Redeye’ with his unmistakable, aquatic sense of spaciousness, from the layered vocals that weave in and out of one another in the chorus, to the graceful, running pianos, smooth drums, and his vulnerable, reverb-soaked voice. Submerged in late-night feelings, “Redeye,” is a viscous, gooey track that moves with sensuality and desire. Born during a trip to Costa Rica, Galimatias uses field recordings of rain and birdsong to capture the aural palette of the tropical climate, the headspace of those lonely hours where all other noise fades into the background and you’re left alone with your thoughts, memories, regrets, hopes, and desires.

Zoe & Cloyd blend musical styles in klezmer medley

With their latest Organic Records single, Zoe & Cloyd reveal once again their unique ability to blend mountain music with the klezmer music legacy of Natalya Zoe Weinstein’s family on “Hoffman’s Hora/David’s Frailach.”

Incorporating two klezmer tunes — the first from a 1923 recording by xylophonist Jacob Hoffman, the second from sheet music in the handwriting of Weinstein’s grandfather — the medley marks a further refinement of the synthesis Weinstein and John Cloyd Miller have been exploring since the formation of Zoe & Cloyd, including “Berditchever Sher” and “Zisa Meydele” on 2019’s I Am Your Neighbor. Woven together with their authentic renditions of Appalachian old-time, folk and bluegrass songs, as well as their roots-inspired originals, it’s an integral part of the duo’s musical identity.
