Canadian post-punk/electronic duo, Freak Heat Waves are today sharing ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’ – stream here – a fuzzy, psychedelic cut lifted from the forthcoming record, Zap The Planet which is out September 4 on Telephone Explosion. If there’s one word that describes Eli Winter, it’s precocious. At twenty-three, the Chicago musician and writer (named an artist to watch for 2020 by The Guardian and “generational talent” by NYCTaper) has performed with Ryley Walker and David Grubbs and toured the country by bus and train. His first album, The Time To Come, explored the difficulties of coping with grief and Hurricane Harvey with finely wrought melodic solo instrumentals belying his age. Unbecoming, his virtuosic second album, is bolder, uncompromising yet accessible, showcasing ambitious, spacious compositions and a heightened command of the guitar, and providing measured catharsis during intertwined political crises.

TWO, the new duo of Aja Volkman and Dan Epand formerly of LA indie rock outfit Nico Vega, release their second single “In This Rough” (produced by Epand and mixed by Rich Costey who has worked with Muse, Sigur Ros and Foster The People among many more) accompanied by a visually powerful music video creatively shot during quarantine and written/directed by Epand. Of the new single and video, Volkman says, “It’s one of the most honest pieces of music I have ever written. With our video, I truly feel that Dan brought to life the raw emotion that I felt when I first put these words down on paper. I went through some dark times trying to find the kind of surrender that is expressed in this song. What did pain teach me? It taught me that true relief comes from letting go. Pain is the resistance to letting go, for the actual letting go is painless. What is beyond the pain is more simple. Its stillness. And that is the core challenge of life. To learn to let go of everything. For we have no other choice. This experience is temporary. And when you achieve letting go, when you loosen your grip, peace is found.” “In This Rough” is the lead single from their highly anticipated debut EP, Pull the Knife Out, out July 17 on their own TWENTYTWO RECORDS label.
Bananagun – ‘The True Story of Bananagun’
Hailing from Melbourne, but with a sound stretching from 60s and 70s Afrobeat and exotica, the proto-garage rhythmic fury of The Monks and the grooves of Os Mutantes, there’s an enticing lost world exoticism to the music of Bananagun. It’s the sort of stuff that could’ve come from a dusty record crate of hidden gems; yet as the punchy, colourfully vibrant pair of sold out singles Do Yeah and Out of Reach have proven over the past 12 months, the band are no revivalists. On debut album The True Story of Bananagun, they make a giant leap forward with their outward-looking blend of global tropical psychedelia.

Mae Muller releases ‘I Don’t Want Your Money (Acoustic)’ + Accompanying Video
“I wrote I Don’t Want Your Money just under 2 years ago now, and I’m so happy it’s finally out! I just wanted to show that there are other ways to be treated, rather than just materialistically, especially if you have your own money! I’m financially independent so you have to find other ways to impress me, I don’t need anything else apart from love and affection. Treat me with respect and we’re GOOD.”
The track “is about coming to terms with your own obscurity – but like, in a pretty upbeat way,” says vocalist and guitarist Chris McCaughan. “It’s an escape dream to an edge of the world while being strangely content with some undergrown adulthood. It’s part undercover love song to the sometimes beautiful randomness of the universe and part offbeat, comical reminder to keep rewriting your unknown future. Like so much of the record, the song chases tiny flashes of light in the darkness.”

The gritty footage backs GARZI’s impassioned vocal delivery against the suitably stark surroundings of the rural pacific northwest.
