While many tend to associate southern Arizona with lush golf courses and well-to-do snowbirds, there’s another, older side of Western culture there that is still alive and well. Yes, despite the fact that it’s been around 100 years since the automobile brought about the end of the Wild West, the spirit of the cowboys, sheriffs and bandits lives on in the river rock taverns and smoky saloons which cover the desert from Phoenix all the way down to Mexico.

J. Douglas Wright – “Birds N Butterflies”
“Birds N Butterflies” is about finding refuge in God during unbearable circumstances. The darkness of life can be overwhelming, yet hope, strength, and peace can be found in the midst of it all. The song is inspired by Isaiah 40:31—”But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint”; Philippians 4:7—”And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds”; and Matthew 11:28—”Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened down, and I will give you rest”.

Written and recorded in his adopted hometown of Brooklyn, NY, the 12-track collection is proof positive that great country music can come from anywhere. Produced by Neal Casal, who would tragically pass away not long after mixing was completed, the collection fuses timeless twang with modern sensibilities, tipping its cap to the likes of Merle Haggard and Gram Parsons as it explores a distinctly urban, 21st century landscape through a classic country lens. The album’s first single, “All American Singer,” (listen/share), features the legendary Mickey Raphael on harmonica, as it celebrates music’s ability to bridge generations and politics, race and religion.

STREAM: Wray shares focus track ‘Blank World’ + new dream-pop album!
Fantasy and science-fiction are often treated as an escape from reality, but in the heart of those fantastic worlds lie prescient truths about our world. On the other side of that coin, some of the world’s greatest aesthetic beauty comes in the form of raw science. The new album from Birmingham, Alabama’s WRAY vibrates at the intersection of those dichotomies and others—hope and pessimism, wild and composed, joy and pain. There is no light without dark, no dark without light, a concept which birthed the dual record Stream of Youth / Blank World.

Kestrels’ new single (feat. J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr.) and Skope Mag?
Largely written on the sofa of Ash’s Tim Wheeler, and recorded with John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Alvvays, Kurt Vile, Cyndi Lauper), Dream or Don’t Dream is a vulnerable and open record from Chad Peck, who is also a high school English teacher, focusing on life’s insecurities and being totally honest about one’s flaws. Recorded mostly to tape and using over 100 guitar pedals and mainly vintage and boutique gear, the album is nostalgic and soaring, with plenty of nods to Superchunk, My Bloody Valentine and Dinosaur Jr., with whom Kestrels have also shared the stage.

Both members have weathered the storms of thrash/speed/industrial metal through the decades and are hellbent on creating a vision which transmogrifies equal parts ’79, ’86, and the turmoil of recent times.

Daniels, who is best known as a clarinetist and tenor saxophonist accomplished in both jazz and classical music, has a long history of playing Brazilian and Latin music. However, he admitted to “being kind of a dummy about the specific great Brazilian composers that I was about to tackle when George approached me with the idea for the trilogy, but I have this clave (Afro-Cuban groove) in my body as much as anyone because I just love this music so much.”

Rising UK star Fifi Rong stakes yet another case for being one of the country’s most vital artists of our time with her latest single “Love Yourself First”. Tapping into the emotional energy of our current climate, the new single toys with themes of self-doubt and inner-confidence with its moving production and faint, tender lyrics that are sung in both Chinese and English, expressing Fifi’s multicultural heritage. The song’s unique blend of affective pop, and experimental lucid R&B brings her into an elite league of paradigm-pushing, Avant-pop female artists.
