You can’t beat a good pun. Unless it’s a good tune. Thankfully Darren Michael Boyd has a way with both. Just where The Earth is B Flat fits in to rock and roll’s big picture is anyone’s guess; part classic rock, part progressive technicality, all instrumental and totally mind-expanding.
Music, even something as established as guitar-based rock, is at its best when it is stalking the peripheries of the established creative playground and looking for new territory to explore, for new boundaries to push, and that is what is happening here. It sits somewhere between Steve Vai’s technical dextrousness and the strange jazz-scapes of his previous employer Frank Zappa. Look up the phrase “weird and wonderful” in an on-line thesaurus and it probably has a link to his homepage!
