New artist to check – Elah Hale (INTERSCOPE)

20 year old Elah Hale is an incredibly talented new artist we’re working with, set to release her debut EP on Interscope Records this spring, after she makes her SXSW live debut. She dropped her first new single of 2020 today along with the official video for “One Star Rating” and it’s an all too familiar sentiment for anyone who’s been in love. Shot in Hale’s native Brooklyn, the prodigious singer-songwriter (who started playing guitar when she was 5!) recalls back to fond but bittersweet memories of a romantic relationship from the past that can no longer be rekindled. Wisely she states, One Star Rating is about fuck ups, and making up for them. Love is really difficult, and unfair and sometimes completely out of your control. This is about making up for that”.

Rufus Wainwright unveils ‘Unfollow The Rules,’ new single “Damsel In Distress” out now

“‘Damsel In Distress’ is an homage to Joni Mitchell in some ways,” says Wainwright, “particularly the structure. My husband and I now live in Laurel Canyon. I wasn’t that familiar with Joni’s music but Jörn became obsessed and took me on a journey into her music. We ended up hanging out with her and I get now why she’s one of the greats. So it’s part Laurel Canyon, part a song about a personal relationship that I’m trying to come to terms with, but mostly my Mitchell virginity being broken.”

VUNDABAR (FFO Carseat Headrest, The Strokes) share new track + video, ‘Montage Music’

Vundabar are today sharing a new track, ‘Montage Music’ alongside an essay on Talkhouse by guitarist/singer Brandon Hagen, which explores the mythology of American life and culture through the symbology of cars. Hagen explains, “Montage Music is a meditation on the way capitalism takes beautiful cycles of birth, death and rebirth and makes them ugly by making future regenerations impossible. The song uses a car as the primary symbol for this as it exemplifies the unsustainable, though sometimes intoxicating, aspect of modern life. The narrator becomes fully engrossed in the vanities and demands of this life, and only at the end of the song notices a cloud of burning black smoke rising from tea being made without water, now impossible not to notice.”

Landover, Maryland’s own Black Fortune is back with a new track and video for “Nothing To Lose.” “The meaning and inspiration behind the track just comes from me growing up not having much,” Black Fortune explains. “I had nine brothers and sisters, my mom was working hard but we were still on welfare, my dad was battling his drug addiction – all of that left me with not very much, and even just wanting some of the basic things I had to go get it on my own… I had the mentality of ‘I have nothing to lose.’ I already didn’t have s**t so what was the worse that was gonna happen, you know? It was either go get it or be left with nothing.”

Sour Widows Premieres Self-Titled EP via NEW NOISE MAG

“the young band show a great deal of promise as they mix bedroom pop, post-hardcore, and a penchant for big melodies and wayward structures. With influences that range from Angel Olsen and Big Thief to Pile and Duster, you can actually hear each of those make their impact in Sour Widows’ songwriting, pushing it toward pop ease and pulling it back out with tension and delightfully unwieldy guitar progressions.”
