As the rock world remembers Tom Petty with the October anniversaries of his death and birth, Jon Scott, the long-time friend and former record label radio promo man who saved the legendary rocker’s career “with a vengeance” en route to Hall of Fame status some 40 years ago is devoting the entire month to celebrating Petty’s life through the special relationship chronicled in Scott’s book, TOM PETTY AND ME: My Rock ‘N’ Roll Adventures with Tom Petty (CB Publishing, 191 pp., $25).
Experimental Drummer Reed Stewart Releases “Invading My Space” via New Noise Magazine
Reed Stewart is a Nashville-based drummer-composer who draws on a wide array of musical influences from Thundercat to Nine Inch Nails to Louis Cole, he is a “musician’s musician.” His most recent album, MALLET, due for release in late summer of 2019, features condensed electric-rock songs that catch easily and evaporate slowly. Though classically trained as a drummer and percussionist, Reed wrote every track and performed all components; vocals, bass and keyboards as well other instruments. Reed uses electronic, synthetic and analog sounds in MALLET resulting in a fluid sound that evokes the constant fluctuation of his childhood, having moved 11 times before the age of 18.

No Control is our take on a Springsteen-style song, that’s also kind of calling into question some of the issues around classic rock archetypes. It all seems very “dude-centric” still. Toronto is an amazing place to live for all it’s diversity, but sometimes all that can get taken for granted. This song is from the perspective of someone that might want to be a kind of ally, but feels lost or helpless or like they don’t have a place in the conversation. Well you CAN help the people around you who are marginalized, but it means speaking the fuck up when the chance presents itself.

GRAMMY Award winner Sturgill Simpson has announced plans for a special underplay tour to benefit the Special Forces Foundation, kicking off at the legendary Troubadour in West Hollywood, CA, on September 29. The limited run of dates comes on the heels of the simultaneous release of his much-anticipated album and Netflix anime film of the same name, “SOUND & FURY,” available everywhere on September 27. Bluegrass wunderkind Jaelee Roberts’ newest single, “One’s Real Life,” originated in a dream. Roberts recalls, “In this dream, Harley Allen and I were writing a song. When I woke up, I could vividly remember the melody and the hook … ‘one’s real life’ … and a few other lines. It was enough to get me thinking about the differences between what we see in people’s photos and the reality of their lives, so I had a pretty good start on it from the beginning.”

Twin Cities-based extreme metal quintet BLACKTHORNE presents their self-titled debut LP. MAT KEREKES SHARES OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO FOR “AUTUMN DRESS”
Kerekes began writing and demoing Ruby at home with no particular goal in mind besides self-expression. However once longtime collaborator Will Yip (Tigers Jaw, Circa Survive) heard the demos, he asked that Kerekes consider releasing them on his Elektra Music Group sub-label Black Cement Records. Kerekes tracked most of the instruments himself, and produced and engineered Ruby in a studio that he built in his garage with his brother.
Interscope Records Signs South Carolina Rapper Blacc Zacc
Blacc Zacc has signed to Interscope through a joint venture with South Coast Music Group — the label behind the breakout success of Billboard 200-charting rapper DaBaby. Founded by CEO Arnold Taylor and co-founder and VP Daud “King” Carter, South Coast Music Group has put out several acclaimed projects from Blacc Zacc. Those projects include his recent release Trappin Like Zacc, a 13-track mixtape featuring guest spots from DaBaby, Stunna 4 Vegas, LightSkinKeisha, and Key Glock.
