AB5 Could Crush Independent Music in California (Guest Column/Op-Ed)

California has always been a haven for artists and has inspired songs that are heard around the world. A recent change in the law, about to get the stamp of approval by the California Legislature, will unintentionally drive independent artists out of California. While changes in technology have made it possible for artists to remain independent and create music on their own terms, this law will force them to make that music outside of California.

A recent court ruling called “Dynamex” by the California Supreme Court has redefined what it means to be an independent contractor. The State, in an ambitious effort driven by labor unions, is attempting to codify it in a bill called “AB5”.

With a titular tribute to a famous fallen peer (Trayvon Martin and Yung Mal were born in the same year), “Trayvon” finds Mal stretching his melodic muscles, alternating his more familiar thumping bars with a raspy croon: “I stay down, my money long/B*tch, I’m flyer than a drone/I get high, stay in my zone.” Directed by Qasquiat, the new video finds Mal mobbing with homies in a dramatically-lit warehouse, rocking a hoodie in homage to Trayvon Martin himself. “Trayvon” is the latest video from Iceburg, Mal’s debut solo mixtape, which dropped last week.

JANINA JADE Releases New Single & Lyrics Video ‘Tattooed Fire Woman’

I was asked to describe the concept behind this song, but you know what, I never sit down with a plan or concept when I write. It is almost on a totally subconscious level when i write.”
