23-year-old Oakland rapper Michael Sneed announces ‘Days We Lost’ debut mixtape, shares infectious, bouncy “Hopscotch”

At 17, Michael Sneed moved to Washington D.C., where he made a name for himself in the open mic curcuit, through warehouse performances, and eventually found himself playing local venues and festival stages. In 2017, Michael returned home to Oakland, CA. A college graduate working as a Starbucks clerk in a Safeway. Drenched in student loans, post-college depression, and the stench of coffee, Michael decided it was time for him to work on his first mixtape. Staying relatively lowkey, Michael spent a year inside of Bay Area producer, Wax Roof’s house working on the project with his friends. The kinky haired, Mario mustached, Broadway musical loving, Oakland native uses music as a tool to tell stories and lessons fro his childhood as he runs down memory lane and away from the responsibilities of young adulthood. Michael is building a world where elements of Hip-Hop, Jazz, Soul, Gospel, Funk, and Folk come together as one to express a boy, on the cusp of adulthood desperately clinging onto his childlike creativity, purity, and innocence.

Today, Jessi McNeal has released her new LP The Driveway. Billboard Magazine, which premiered The Driveway this week, called the album “reflective.” “That’s definitely how I process life: pen and guitar in hand,” McNeal told Billboard. “I was letting the songs come. I let the pile emerge and then started looking and going, ‘What’s the overarching theme here?’ and then, ‘Which songs fit with that theme?’ Definitely the overall theme was transition and being in the middle of some really hard stuff, not knowing how or when it’s going to wrap up – and being OK with that waiting. Huntington Beach, CA Artist DENM Explores the Seedier Side of So Cal Beach Culture on Late-Summer Jam “Blow It Up”

DENM says: “I wrote “Blow It Up” initially about my neighbors when I was living in the seedy beach town of Isla Vista. They were loud and wild. Always partying and fighting. I got punched in the face by one of them actually trying to break up a fight in the street midday on a Saturday haha. Classic vibes. They were good dudes though. Somehow there was always broken glass and syringes outside my house. Livin’ in a slum beach paradise what more can you expect? So I was trying to write the song in the first person from their point of view. But as I continued writing the song, it began to sound a lot more like the way I grew up in San Diego as well. Cuz that’s who we were– rowdy and violent kids just trynna get wild and have fun. Surfing and skating and always finding trouble. Or trouble always finding us haha. So it’s kind of a song written about life in Southern California. The seedier side. It’s not all Beverly Hills and Malibu. It’s tough and you gotta learn to be tough to make it. But it’s also a party and good time. There’s no place like it.”
